I feel like a bit of a sap asking this, I've been riding for years - bikes and motorbikes (which also need to be washed and have chains to be lubed) but the tip always with motorbikes was to apply the lube with the rear wheel spinning so that the centrifugal forces would distribute the lube throughout the chain.

That's fine with heavy duty motorcycle lube. But with light bicycle chain oil, I just end up splattering my freshly cleaned wheels and back end of the frame with chain oil as I turn the pedals to move the chain to apply the oil the full length of it, and all the bits of the rear mech and cassette etc

Is there a smart way to do it? Cos my way is not it...
