Is there anything better at this price point?
Anyone have one and can comment?
I want drops, single speed, can handle bumpy towpaths and do lots and lots of miles. Basically a commuting workhorse.

nope, just change the peddals and away you go
really want the crois de fer but its another £500 quid so single speed seems like amazing value, especially being steel!0 -
I've recently been through a very similar thought process... I nearly bought the Day One Cross several times. In the end I decided to buy a Surly Cross Check frame from Wiggle (£290 in the platinum sale) which I'm building up as a fixed gear commuter.

With a total budget of £600, my finished bike will have better wheels and components than an off-the-peg Genesis. The other advantage is that with the horizontal drop outs rather than track ends I can, in the future, run the frame as a geared tourer if I get bored of fixed / singlespeed.
Either way I do think the Genesis is good value.0 -
The Day One Cross is a really nice looking bike. Its on the n+1 list, after my new road bike... havent told the wife yet though '11 Cannondale Synapse 105CD - FCN 4

Building a bike from scratch is a bit beyond my capabilities and I'm after something on C2W - hopefully Halfords will be able to source it as I'm stuck on their scheme.
Only downside is the colour - the flat bar version is 'gunmetal' which looks a lot better.0
