whats a good strap mounted rack ?

Comments

  • Dunno but I recommend a towbar mounted rack. Nice and secure but higher initial cost.

Depends on if your car has a towbar( £100 upwards) and your budget. No worries about access to rear of car as lots of them tilt, most are lockable and no chance of losing bikes off the back when a strap isnt fitted properly

Not really an answer to your question I know but a much better option

Thule 9105 (or whatever the current version is) - has coated metal straps rather than fabric ones so it's very rigid once it's clipped in place..

I just got this cheap one from Argos CLICK

Not had a chance to try it out yet, but it seems sturdy enough.

p.s. i`m sure its the same as the one in halfruads for £80

    **Edit**

Just checked the halfauds site and in there "sale" its now down to £40

I use a Hollywood Express 3. I usually havetwo bikes and a light board on it. Obviously I needed to run a lighting socket (discretely mounted under bumper)... Get one from towbar shop rather than halfords as it'll be half theprice. It will mark the paint slightly, ime mainly on the side strap clips, but abut of inner tube anda clean car really reduces it. It takes around 10 minsto fit rackand bikes/ lightboard andive driven a lot ofmiles at motorway speeds and despite regular checks, it's always remained safe and secure. It also fits in the boot ( golf) when on a ride if you worry about it disappearing. Towbar/ roof mounts would be preferable but I can usethis on various vehicles with relative ease.

None of them are "ok" on the paint, due to the way it sways about it will rub and grind on your paintwork.

Your best bet is to make sure its got tons of rubber around the arms that hook onto your rear door/hatch to reduce it but even that can cause scratching due to the weight of the bikes and the forces being applied while travelling.

Depends on your budget....I had a Pendle rack which are around £80.00 (can be picked up of ebay for less than half that) which was ok however it sat to close to the car so I was to convered about the pedals catching the glass and paint...

Had a good look and out of the 10 or so the Saris Bones is the best you can buy...it's arch design leaves loads of clearance from the car and it's six strap fitting sticks to the car like clue...they retail from £120 for a two bike and £140 for a three...again you can save a bit on ebay...but because there so good you won't save to much...I bought a 3 bike for £80.00...and to be honest they are great value for money...you have my word on that !!

    Been looking at this too.

The Saris Bones looks very good. It's kinda dear for me at the moment but hoping to find the cash shortly. It's about the only one I know of that my car can take. I've got a new shape Civic Type R which has a spoiler in the middle of the rear window and can't take a tow bar...

Gonna keep my eyes open for a Saris rack on Ebay etc.

i have boot liner but its not just that what bothers me. My seat's seem to crush and go out of shape at the corner's when the seats are down. I would mabe be better off wid a roof mounted one what sort of price am i looking at to get roof mounted set up.

Regarding the Type R, I'm not having any issues carrying the bike really. I fold the seats down and it fits perfect. Just a bit messy at times, but not been a problem.

I'm keen to get a rack to make it a bit easier but it's not urgent. I'm kinda of thinking that I'd prefer to clean the car than risk scratching the paint though.

    Sorry for the aside folks.
