Carbon steerer stem not gripping/6700 lever reach adjustment
2 questions:
I can't get my stem to grip on my steerer. There's a split shim under the stem and the stem itself seems to have shims between the clamp, presumably to prevent overtightening. If I remove these, am I likely to crunch the steerer tube? Any ideas on torque settings?
I have 6700 shifters and my short pudgy fingers struggle to reach - is there reach adjust in these units? I can't see an obvious grub screw.
Cheers

If your stem has a shim(collar)inside make sure the split(slot)on both the shim&stem are lined up before you tighten up the stem bolts. If they're not lined up the stem won't pinch the shim tight on the steerer.Be careful not to overtighten where carbon is invovled-firm but not solid.TT photos http://www.flickr.com/photos/steverob/0

Try some carbon paste on your steerer before fitting the stem.
The brake reach adjust on 6700 shifters is via plastic shims which fit above the levers (I think they come in a couple of different sizes) - they should come with the shifters if they were purchased aftermarket.0 -
Most of the carbon stem clamps I have come across suggest a maximum torque of 8Nm, which, when done on a torque wrench was tighter than I thought wise when doing it up by hand.Complicating matters since 19650
