GT or Specialized

Hi, New to this forum and very new to mountain bikes. Want to purchase my first mountain bike to use for road cycling and a bit off road but not too serious. Want something that will last but only want to spend £400 max. I know very little about bikes but to my limited knowledge think 2 good choices for us are GT Aggressor XC3 09 from Halfords or Specialized Hardrock Sport Disc. GT is cheaper but seem to have a good spec I think or don't mind spender the extra for Specialized if better. Thank you for your help.

Was a similar thread on this recently.
I'd try them out, see what fits and feels best. There id no doubt the Gt is better value and has the better spec though.0 -
The spesh has a better frame but the GT has better components.
Have you riden either of them?0 -

Well geo is kinda personal, hence why he should try them out.0

I did ask wether he had tried them
I know geometry is a very personal thing but so is gearing and saddles and handlbars and grips etc etc0 -
So why is the geo better?0

Just felt much nicer on the climbs and gave a lot more confidence on the descents.
I don't go saying any old cr@p you know0 -
Ah, so better for you ;-)
There is actually little in the geo - the Aggressor has 0.5 degree slacker HA, and 0.5 degree steeper SA with a very slightly shorter top tube for a give seat tube size.0 -
But as the old saying goes (I think not that old )
A little goes a long way0 -
I prefer the Gt geo lol.0

Well you would :roll:0 -
I used to have one. I felt it climbed and descended better than the Hardrock...0

yeah GT's tend to represent better value for money, especially at this price point0

Not tried any yet will tomorrow. As they have a sale on the GT it looks a good buy but just worried buying from Halfords. I will go try them tomorrow.0

Just don't give it in for its free service. it will come back worse.
My mate gaev his bike in to them for a service after a crash and they put a new chain on a worn cassette (different chain to what was on it) even thouhg it was fine. Also about five minutes into the next ride the crank fell off with no warning. I traced this to there being no bolt repeat NO BOLT attaching the crank to the bottom bracket.
He still hasn't got it back from going in to get this fixed and that was nearly 2 weeks ago.0 -
GT all the way though I'm biased to be honest as I have the XCR
The components are far better value than the Specialized setup
Not sure weight wise how the hardrock compares though the rockhopper is significantly lighter. If I remember right there is not much differnce betwen Aeggressor and the Hardrock
Hardrock probably wins in the looks department thoughEnough bikes to open a bike shop but always room for one more...0
