Hi

Ive now got Campag 11sp driveset, however the chains are obviously thinner than 10sp and therefore you can only buy campag chains at the mo which need that ridicously expensive tool to remove and refit them. Does anyone do a 11sp quick link yet or is there any after market 11sp chain due out?

  • According to this thread, you can use the SRAM 10 speed Powerlock. I've not tried it myself but ...

I have got the Ice Toolz 11 speed chain tool (about £20) and it does the job. For peening the Campag joining pin you can turn the tool round and gently flatten the rough metal left when removing the guide pin. This worked for me and the chain hasn't broken yet!
Who you gonna believe? Me or your own eyes?

I cheacked out the kmc chains a few weeks ago but didnt see any 11speed ones! doh! obviously wasnt looking properly! And thats answered my question! i will go with one of these for a spare/replacement.

I saw the thread about using a 10sp link but considering the already tight tolerences im not sure sure i would go down that route!

    Cheers for the replies guys.

I have successfully used a SRAM Powerlink to join my 11 speed chain with no problems at all :)

I can also confirm what Domhnall Dearg says about the Ice Toolz chain breaker - a lovely bit of kit for breaking the chain but needs a little 'manipulation' for the peening operation :)

That would seem to be in line with another post on another topic that stated that the inside distance between the plates of a 9, 10, & 11 speed chain were the same. It's the
plates themselves that get thinner as more gears are added. Or maybe I misunderstood that??? Anybody???

I looked all over the net for the 11 speed KMC chain last week and it looks like it's due in a month or so. No-one stocks it in the UK at the moment as far as I could see.

I bit the bullet and bought the 11 speed chain tool from Wiggle using a discount code. It works beautifully btw.

What should you carry with you on the bike if you have an 11-speed chain?
Will a normal chain tool be good enough to get you home?
Surely you don't have to carry one of those £120 jobs.

I hope you are right. It's not in Campag's interest to say you have to use their chain tool at £110.00. It would be much better for them to say any chain tool will do because they would sell more groupsets. It's too much of a risk – you don't know when its going to break, just because you've done a few of rides without the chain breaking means nothing.

Do the SRAM Powerlinks have a bit of a rep for breaking then?
