Im 5'3" and bought a 48" CAAD9 5, this past summer. I didn't want a women's specific bike but now I'd like to switch out the handlebar for a smaller (more narrow) one. Any advice on what size or which one to get that may fit more comfortably?

Take a look at FSA Omega Compacts - they're a compact design, shorter reach and smaller drop. :D

Prob a 40 or 42 cm for you.

Go into a shop and hook the bars over your shoulders. The ends should just touch the knobbly bits at the top.

What do you mean by the knobbly bits? Your collar bone joint?

Yes. According to this pic it's called the Acromion.
