Anybody got any tips for a cheap spear rear wheel I can use just for on the trainer ?

I dug out an old wheel from the parts bin know as the garage but the hb is rough as 10 bears (the reason it was taken off the bike inthe first place). It'll do for now but it's going to fail soon. :?

Needs to be able to take a 1.25 trainer tyre.

Any ideas ???

Cheers

any wheel does it really matter

ask your LBS they will have some cheap ones hanging around.

also saying what is needed helps. IE how many gears and does it need to be disc ready or not?

No need for it to be disc ready - you don't use brakes on a turbo! Just make sure you've got a spare pad spacer or eventually you'll have to pry the brakes apart after knocking the brake lever - Doh!

Anything cheap will do - the only thing I'd say is you may want to get the same hub (finances allowing) as otherwise your gears will be slightly out of synch. Not really a problem but a minor irritation none-the-less...

Merlin have some sale wheels - cheapest they do is a LX hub with 117 disc rim at £35. Seems pretty reasonable for what you want although not sure on the width of the rim - nothing a quick call wouldn't sort...

£35 sound a good deal to me. Yeah I haven't bathered with a disk on the wheel thats on there now. I left it on the outdoor wheel.

I hear what you're saying about keeping the hb the same bt I don't mind it needing a tweek. It's only a 2min job.

    Cheers

Forgot to metion it's 9 speed. I forget that not everybody is running 9 still.

Like I said it's not really a problem - just a consideration if you can get a same brand hub for a reasonable price... I tend to stick my bike in a relatively high gear and leave it there when training anyway.

I ended up using an old wheel I had in the loft - ended up buying a second cassette after a while just for ease of switching between my trainer and proper tyres so it may be worth keeping an eye out for a bargain cassette in the meantime too...

    Best of luck!

Already on the current "spare" wheel. Got about 3-4 spare cassettes kickign around after upgrading the cheap heavy ones that came on bikes :D

Yeah that was my plan keep an outdoor wheel and a trainer wheel so all I have to do is swap them out (and tweek the gears if needed).

Cheers for the tips will check out Merlin
