I'm going to be getting some new flat peddles soon, (Superstar or wellgo's) and am thinking about getting shoes too. Having read the forum i understand 510's are the product of choice but as they are 70 - 90 quid i have been looking for an alternative. Has anyone used Airwalk? Just saw these and wondered if they were any good?

  • I have just bought these, They have pretty goo ankle protection, but not yet tested on my bike.
Hoping to get out this weekend to see how they go.

Will post up how they performed.

if you can go up to £57
shimano am40 is a close 2nd best to the five 10. i trust merlin & crc as ive bought from them in the past. other alternative could be nike 6.0 oncores

I haven't tried them but when I looked the soles of the Airwalk I found them a bit hard. Vans are softer (Tkmaxx) . Shimano soles are better still.

    hi bob

i could go to whatever price I want, it's more about value for money with me! I think I must have some gypsey blood in me! Are 510 really worth it? Bear in mind the most I will do is something like the dog at cannock

I'd recommend a cheap pair of Vans personally, 5 10s are stickier there's no doubt, the question is whether it matters at all. Mostly it's in the mind, they "feel" sticky but unless you're doing crazy riding or you have horrible footwork your feet won't slip with any half-sensible shoe. I've done some fairly hard riding in a pair of old caterpillar boots...

5 10s and similiar are good mainly for confidence boosting and marginal conditions, ie, riding while very tired, or right on the edge of your ability where it basically gives you room for error. I like mine for this, at fort william and on mcmoab I really appreciated them, and when riding in the snow, but for most rides they just don't do anything at all that my Vans do. Other than that they're wearing out far faster.

I won't say don't get them, just don't get blinded by the hype. They do feel good to ride in, the question is how far that actually matters.
