£400 budget

My fella is looking for a bike at the moment, we are new to mountain biking so really don't have much idea what we should be looking for. His budget is £400ish, we have seen two bikes but not sure if they are good quality and value for money. The two we were looking at were the claud bulter stone river 2009 - http://www.evanscycles.com/products/claud-butler/stone-river-2009-mountain-bike-ec018788 which we found for £350 and the dimond back response - http://www.gooutdoors.co.uk/diamondback-mens-response-09-mountain-bike-p139821#descTabSect0 which is £400

Id be more than greatful if any one had any other sugestions for us to have a look at or advice on those two. Thanks

the claud butler is discontinued and not very good anyway. the diamondback is a much better bike.

however better options -

It's a decent bike, i've been giving mine a proper pasting this afternoon.

Deffo i bought the XC 2 on thrusday nite it was built and ready to go on friday morning, christened it this weekend and absolutly love it!

(I have been waiting for a deal to come up on halfords for a couple of weeks, it just so happened the bike i wanted came up on a deal)

I think this won a recent test in one of the mags, I would be tempted if your budget is £400.

Thanks for all the replys, he really liked the aggressor ive been on the halfords website and it says there are none in stock anywhere in the country lol. He would like to see them in real life before buying you see. we also like the gary fisher one, i said if he doesn't get it i want it haha. Think it may be this one he goes for, theres quite alot of stockists of this bike around here so im going to give a few of them a call see if they have got one in for him to have a look at.

I think a disc version is also available for about 50 more which you might want to consider if your budget will strechi

Turn around of events and we have gone for the aggressor, managed to find one in the nick of time, and we got to see it in halfords, so its ordered for £329 and ready to be picked up on thursday. Thanks again youve all been a great help.
