SRAM X7 Shifter repair advice req'd

help....bits of my rear shifter are all over the garage floor....
i was trying to replace the cable so i unscrewed the cover and bits went everywhere. i now know that the act of changing the cable is a task far simpler than i thought but in my usual manner i just set about unscrewing the whole thing....
simple question really, where/how does the wire spring inside the shifter fit? its a SRAM X7 from a 2009 Commencal if that its of any assistance.
