snapped mech...

hi yesterday a rock took my rear mech clean of the bike, and now i am wondering what to do.

can i just remove the rest of the mech and remove a few links of the chain and run it single speed on the current cassette or do i have to buy a single speed conversion kit?

    You will need a conversion kit. You have no way of tensioning the chain unless the drop outs happen to be horizontal. Why not just buy a new mech ?

    Is it the mech that Fcuked or has it snapped the Hanger.Most bikes are fitted with a hanger that is designed to snap to protect the frame/rear mech.
    What frame is it?Photos would help.

    Basically i took it to my bike shop and they said it is buggered. i think i will just wait and buy a new mech.

    bet the hanger needs replacing as well.

    yep the kona, i will just take it back to the bike shop and hopefully they will know if the hangers broken as they are a kona dealer. also what derallieur should i get, do i have to replace like for like or can i upgrade?

    Its in the shops interest to sell you both hanger and Mech.Chances are it could just be the hanger...i've snapped 3 hangers but never trashed a mech.

    Although occasionally they snap, the rear mech goes into the spokes, wipes some spokes out and dessimates the rear mech itself. Also, the saddle went up my bum as I was pedalling hard and it locked the back wheel up (you get the picture)...
    If the mech is saveable, unlike mine, all you'll need is a new hanger and you'll be sorted
