Hello everyone,

I've got a GT I Drive that I'm stripping and putting all the stuff on a new hardtail.

For the new bike I need a new bottom bracket (going from 72mm to 68mm) and also a new middle chainring (chainsuck on the old one).

What bottom bracket would you recommend (I am using a Truativ Blaze crankset). The chainring is a Trushift 32 V7 so would the link at the bottom be ok?

Not much of bike maintainer!

By the time you have bought a BB & middle ring, you are nearly at the cost of a new chainset.

Check out Merlincycles for decent prices.

I would recommend a new chain & cassette too, unless you have changed these very recently.

This is the review of the older one but you can get the deore m590 for about 50 notes online.

I have the GT XCR and the weak point seems the be the Truvative firex crankset. On the plus side it's quite light but it has creaked from new, the black coating has worn off where my shoes rub, the BB didn't last 6 months before developing play and then I started getting chain suck in muddy conditions when shifting down to the granny ring. I've changed the jockey wheels and this may have fixed the chain suck but it doesn't seem economical to replace the BB and chainrings when you can get a Deore which will probably work without fuss so the truvativ has got to go.

I think one of the things which could have been causing the creak and shortened the life of the external bb is that the frame had not been faced in the factory. I have had this done before I fit a new crankset. You might consider buying the crankset from a shop that has the tools to do this.
  • Cheers all.

Abductee, the problems you've had with the firex crankset ring very familiar to those I had with the blaze.

I've had a look at the deore M590 and you're right, available for £50 from chainreaction.

What bottom bracket would you think is best with the M590?

    Thanks.
  • Or does it come with an external bottom bracket?
