The Noise Hope Hubs make....

Ok so I'm planning to get a Cotic Soul built up f(bike to work scheme). Spoken to a few shops and they've recommended Hope hubs for all the right reasons - build quality, spares, UK manufacturer etc.

Thing is I ride with some guys who have em and the clicky noise in freewheeling drives me mad!

I know I know that should be a secondary considerations but do you ever get used to them? Is it less when you are actually on the bike compared to when you are behind someone?

I bet the Gurkha bike regiment never used 'em.....

    go for XT. (or XTR)

better supply of spares, less weight, less issues, less noise.

  • Think its something you get used to.Rode an Orange 5,with Hope hubs and forgot about the noise after 5 mins of riding it.

I think if you strip them down and pack the freehub with grease you can shut them up....

But possibly stop the freehub from working.

    Just peddle more

I actually like the noise (prefer it to Chris King FWIW), so I'm not best placed to answer this.

I've run hopes for years and its not something I've really noticed when riding. They are obviously noisier than shimanos but when riding there are other things to think about...
  • Yea - one of the shops that was trying to convince me said its a great way to wind your mates up on a tough clmb.

Pedal like hell then freewheel just as you come up behind them

True. I don't notice mine any more and I've been using them since 1997. Front hub (never been serviced). Managed to break a rear axle due to me not checking the bearings often enough on the rear (that was after 8 years). Like them so much I've just put hope hubbed road wheels on my Cross bike. :)

The click can be useful for warning people of your presence as well. :D

  • I run Pro II hubs on Stan's ZTR flow rims on both my mountain bikes

I've never noticed the freehub noise whilst off-road, if you are concentrating on your riding, the world normally goes strangely quiet?

I do notice the freehub whilst riding on the road, but really like the noise, it reminds me to pedal faster!!!

its also great whilst riding through London, as pedestrians hear me coming, saves me from having to shout at them

the advantage of the Pro II hubs completely outweigh any possible irritation from the freehub noise

    And? is that it?
not something i'd think people really look for in a hub I don't reckon... more fussed about what's compatible at the time.

Yawn. Let's not have another anti-Hope thread with all the same people with all the same arguments.

what do you look for in a hub? i look for an axel and some spoke holes.... A hub is a hub really. I just use hopes as I've used them for well over 10 years (various hubs, various bikes) and never had one let me down.

    Come in nice colours too...

This thread just makes me think of this...

    41A93678XSL._SL500_AA240_.jpg

I am hope! You are hope!

Anyway. Yes, they sound absolutely ****ing horrible. But they're still pretty good. I'd go DT Swiss if budget allows, XT otherwise but some people do like the Hope noise, and others just don't mind it.

(At some point, the conversation is bound to turn to alloy freehub bodies and cassette wear, and it'll all do the usual circuitous chat, so I'll just get in first and say yes, you can buy a steel freehub, no, it's not a good idea, you end up with a hub that weighs almost as much as XT and costs massively more. Hope aren't the only people to make alloy freehub bodies but they seem to be the only ones to get slated for it)

And no, not a Hope hater, I think they're often pretty poor value and I really dislike some elements of their products but I just finished fitting one of their headsets to the hemlock so not a h8er ;)
