At the title says. It does not hold its position so the chain is not kept taught.

"Position" as in floating forwards and backwards at any tug. The axis of rotation is the point where the rear deraileur is attached to the bike. (i.e. part you screw in with the big allen key)

Shimano Ultegra.

Replies appreciated. Need to get training in for a race fast.

Check that the "B" screw is coming up against the stop on the hanger.

Heya, it isn't and it's not long enough to do. I'm starting to wonder if I'm putting it on at the wrong angle.

I haven't got anything to take a picture of it with so I drew this with paint (sorry).

The bit labelled A does not move as the chain moves (the tooths are not engaged). The chain is only moving around the bit below it. I hope this sheds some light on how I may of set this up wrong.

    Cheers.

Just tried to move the bike about. Made some unholy noises which quickly put a stop to it.

Do those circles in you drawing represent the two jockey wheels, and the oval – the sprockets? Could you have threaded the chain through the derailleur the wrong way (so it engages only with one jockey wheel)?

Check that the chain follows this path:

Is it a new chain? Did you cut it down to size?

Can the mech pivot around the big screw if you move it by hand?

  • Yeah it looks slightly different to your picture.

    It does/did DesWeller.

I've left it with the bike shop as I wanted my gears indexed as well and don't want to mess it up any more. Having to practice on my mountain bike at the moment :D

    [heavy as bricks!]

    Cheers anyway guys :)

I knew the game was up when I saw a picture suggesting you needed a special tool to align the deraileur.
