Hi there,
I recently hace won one of the prizes from WMB 100th Anniversary Competition.
Only one problem though - I won the carbon raceface bar, post and crankset and my bike is a 2008 Rockhopper . . . .
The problem is that the gear is too good for my bike and I think I may look a bit of a idiot if i put them on.
Do you think that I should use them, or sell them to finance some more sensible upgrades ( I only have v brakes and cheap wheels).
I do not mean to moan, is it a very nice dilemma to be in!
Cheers,
Si

sounds like a great opportunity to make a packet on eBay selling stuff you don't need and buy stuff you do.

I would keep one piece though, just to remind you of the comp win
Why would I care about 150g of bike weight, I just ate 400g of cookies while reading this?

    Thanks for the advice,
I can't justify a new bike unfortunately, my 14 month old girl seems to be consuming all my spare money!
    So ebay here I come!
    mmmmmmmmnn disc brakes . . . .

    Probably the best plan.

Is your frame and wheels disc ready?

Maybe consider new wheels too, would make a real difference to the bike.

"As I said last time, it won't happen again."
  • The tests all say that your frame is decent and worthy of upgrading. The parts you've won will save a significant chunk of weight and perform better. Then get a decent set of wheels and hubs (XT hubs and Mavic rims for about £150 from Merlin) and you've got a bike that will be pretty close to the same performance that you would spend a grand on new. Seeing as the price of bikes has gone up considerably since 2008 you'll probably not get much better than you have now if you sell your bike and the bits.

So I'd keep the parts and remember your good fortune every time you ride

  • I won a WMB comp a few years ago,scooping a full XT groupset,Park tools work stand,park tools set,lights,Kryptonite lock,track pump,helmet cam,cleaning solutions and so on.

I used the XT groupset to upgrade my Giant XTC as I figured,it was worthy of upgrading.

As my bike was only a year old,a lot of the parts that came off were in good nick so the redundant parts got sold on the various forum classifeds and the proceeeds were invested in some good secondhand XT/717 wheels and better Reba forks.

There was a lot of stuff that I wasn`t ever likely to use or duplicated stuff I already had,so that got sold on,but I have to say you will never recoup anywhere near the rrp of the new bits....

Still nice to win,and my bike ended up having a complete transformation! :)

Thanks for all the responses, the plan now is as follows:
The CF goodies are on ebay with reserves on them.
Either they sell and I get money to upgrade some things - forks and wheels are disc ready - or I'm going to have a pimped Rockhopper!
    Cheers everyone,
I will keep you informed of progress . .

Oh one more thing - apart from the previous recommendation for wheels from merlin, are there any other wheelsets i should consider?

  • Whats the budget for wheels?

Some good inexpensive wheels around at the moment.

XT with 717s are easy to live with and easy to get spokes for.
But also look at the Shimano MT15 £85,Fulcrom RM10s £125 and Shimano MT65 £185 and tubless compatible. All on offer at Merlin.
