I have a set of the new Dura Ace wheels arriving and have two other sets of wheels with 10 speed only Shimano cassetttes - Higher splines.

Is it OK to use those cassettes on the new wheels which have the 9/10 speed freehub and the lower splines - I realise that whilst they will fit, they will not be quite as snug on the splines - is there any implication and does anyone out there run the Shimano 10 speed only cassettes on 9/10 speed hubs. I just want to make sure that I do not damage the freehub on the new wheels.

Otherwise its another £45 on an Ultegra Cassette....

Those cassettes will be fine. The only difference is the depth of the cut away bit. The internal diameter is the same.
  • Another question, is the spacer required? I'm thining no.

Yes it is. The freehub is 9/10sp.
  • So do I need to get a spacer before I fit the 10 speed cassette on the 9/10 speed Dura Ace Hub or will it have a spacer on already - I have swapped the cassettes before on my 10 speed only wheels and never noticed a spacer? If so which is the correct spacer to buy? thanks for your help on this Guys

You do not need the spacer for a 10sp freehub as that is 10sp only and 10sp cassettes are narrower than 9sp ones. For an 8/9/10sp freehub you need the thin spacer that comes with a 10sp cassette. You have not lost them have you.
  • Thx John, My old 7801 Dura Ace Wheels (10 speed) came with the cassette fitted as they were from a friend - I bought a 10 speed SRAM cassette a year ago that is on my sons bike but that did not have or need a spacer and is on a set of RS10s with no problem and I used it on some Aksiums for a while

So no spacer it seems -mmmmmm

Hopefully Sigma sport my LBS will have one somewhere
