Complete newby and enjoying every mile on my bike, my bike is a cheapo like me, my question is ::: what kind of shoes would be suitable (and cheap) for my pedals which are the stock ones for the bike, I've had a look and theres no manufacture name on them, there is a tiny stamp which reads VP 383 ?, any suggestions?

  • see http://www.vpcomponents.com/pedals.asp? ... pagesize=5 and I'm guessing that they are similar to the 399s and 398s yup ?
    Straps and clips ?
  • Thanks irturner for a reply, yep this is the pedals I have, they are a 'flip' design, what kind of shoe is compatible with these ?

  • i have a carrera valour i cant help you with the pedals i dont know the answer but i took them off and swapped them for an SPD tipe pedal from decathlon £15-20 then bought a pair of road shoes that where compatible with SPD.

The reason i use SPD is because i am a Mountain biker so already have winter boots and mountain bike shoes which are easy to walk in.

Road shoes are much stiffer but not very easy to walk in.
  • Ideally I'd like to keep the existing pedals cos they're 'double-sided', one side being flat like a general run-of-the-mill pedal and can be used with any old trainers, rigger boots, wellingtons etc, but the other side of the pedal has a small locating tab and the spindle bolt forms a small hump, what kind of 'techy' shoe should be used on this side of the pedal ?
  • If I'm not mistaken, the other side of the pedal is just for clips and straps. :? I could be wrong though.

these are ideal then.. Double sided, so you dont have to worry about flipping them, just pedal and you clip in VERY easily.

  • OP wants shoes not pedals and to match their flat or clip pedals it would be the A530 surely.
Assumimg the cleats they supply would match your pedals it looks like any shoes that would fit the three hole cleats. Though I'm only guessing as I've just bought my first road bike and will stick with the straps for the moment (when i pick it up as wasn't expecting them to have the right model in the largest frame in stock so didn't have the bike rack fitted).
    What's your budget btw ?
  • found the pedals in the loft definatly looks like they are for straps which are already on the pedals
  • And the A530 looks like ?????? :?

If your pedals look like the ones you show they are single sided for use with toe clips and straps (or without if you prefer). The reverse side is not for use. You can use almost any shoe with these as cleats are not needed but I would avoid any with carbon or hard plastic soles as these will have no grip on the pedal. Something like this would be OK and would give you the option of going for clipless pedals later if you want.

Making sure you get a good fit is important.

Flat on one side, clip on the other
