I've owned this since new way back in 2000.

Now serves as my do-it-all commuter, off to the shops, general road biased hack.

As new it came with dreadful RST 281 forks, but thanks to the classifieds it now has a lovely set of Surly 1x1 chromoly foks.

Rest of the spec is pretty generic, was never a range topper in it's day. But it's still on the original Shimano 8 speed Altus setup which runs fine and is in pretty good shape for its age.

It's actually really nice to ride, feels very fleet and ironically is better off road with the rigid fork than it ever was with the RST pogo stick.

Thanks. Yeah the bar ends are very useful as I cover a lot of road miles when I commute, so the extra hand positions take a lot of the pain out of long rides. Not sure I'd trust them on narrow tree-lined singletrack though.

  • Just came across your old post and Wow it looks identical to mine. Was my dad's old bike. Turned it into a hybrid with the same forks and riser bars you have but put city slicks on the rims and now its my current roadbike. It is a very plush ride for its age and very fast but i run out of gears quick on the downhills as its a MTB mech with 24 gears, but who cares it flies! I mainly use it on the mountain roads near me. I'll put a pic up here tomorrow, ha!
