Finished first time lower leg fork service but...

....I can't really feel that much difference!

I have a set of 07/08 (not 100% which year they are) Rock Shox Tora 302 forks.

Just spent this afternoon servicing the lower legs after reading various magazine guides, getting advice from this forum and looking at the rock shox guide.

All went well, no damaged seals or bolts however I did put 30ml of new 15wt fork oil into each leg instead of the recommended 15ml.

The reason for this is that I read the gauge on the syringe wrong and didn't realise until I'd finished filling one leg. Yes I know how much of a retard this makes me appear, silly mistake!

Since putting the forks back together and testing them they haven't felt 'that' different, slightly smoother but not sure if its just psychological!

The rebound adjust doesn't seem to have a lot of affect or the actual rebound control either but I think thats always been the case??

Am I just expecting too much from doing a lower leg service or is it possible that over filling with new oil has messed it up?

Finally, I'm thinking of having a go at servicing the top parts of the fork but is this the kind of thing thats best left for the LBS incase it goes wrong?!

Thanks in advance, J.

As you haven't touched the damper, that wont change.

Too much oil can cause problems - remove it asap.

RS bushes and seals generally are the best in the business!
  • Ok thanks SS, I'll drain some out when I get in from work tonight!

Would you recommend servicing the damper as well?

The rebound damper makes a massive difference on my Rebas, something may be wrong with yours. I can change from instant rebound, pogo stick style, to a veeery slow *shluuuurrpp* (the same noise that my mates Foxes make, which is why he calles them the BJ forks ). Around the middle of the adjustment it's definitely more vague, but at the two extremes it feels completely different.

  • Ah, you see I've never felt that much of a difference from my rebound adjust!

Its still turning the shaft inside the fork leg as far as I can tell though but just doesn't seem to make a huge difference.

I'm going to have a read of the manual online and try servicing the damper next! I am scared of messing my fork up though!!

Generally if something feels hugely different after a service it's because you left it too long before you serviced it... If you do it at a sensible time it should be a case of keeping things working well after all.
