The NS holy range is very good, if he doesn't mind rigid forks, they're about £500. click click click
they may not be the best specced, but the frames really are great, if you get that £400 one on offer, you've got a bit of money left over to spend on upgrades, maybe a hydraulic disc brake or some used suspension forks if he wants.

Out of the NS bikes you chose there, I'd go for the Holy 1. It has a full chromoly steel frame. perfect for upgrading
DMR Drones are good bikes too, the only down side to them is no disc mount on the frame and a 14mm rear axle. This could make it hard to upgrade the wheels in the future.
Another nice bike for those looking at the Commencal is the Absolut 2. Little over the budget of £500 but comes with gears and a suspension fork.

I run my jump bike singlespeed but you may want gears if you have to ride a fair way to get to the jumps.

2 in stock, fab rigid street/dirt 24" mountainbike
good components and on offer! 8)
I didn't say it wasn't. I said that the Holy 1 is full chromoly, the Holy 2 is just a chromoly front end (top, down and seat tube)

Giant STP 1 2009 - £470
Bit better components than the Chucker, but if we are talking about the one from Halfords, then that's a decent bike too.
