I'm starting to piece together a new build from scratch for my brother. Looking for a hardtail suitable for forks 100-120mm travel. Currently looking at the soul brother frame from engage (anyone know if it comes witha seat clamp or headset?). Any other good options?

Sintesi 707 from Merlin is a great frame.

mfield build an Engage, so write him a PM.
He's active for now on the forum.

If you missed these, but I like the look of the Engage more:
    GT Avalanche 1.0
    Dirty Jo Semi Creme

    Hi
I built the custom Engage for my dad (look here - http://www.bikeradar.com/mtb/forums/vie ... t=12661700).

Brilliant frame for the price! It's about 4lbs, is butted and has re-inforced headtube area, so quite strong. Also looks good (much better in the flesh). It doesn't come with a headset or seat clamp. If you do go for this frame, I recommend the FSA orbit Z.

The build cost £510, and weighs 29.9lbs, and that is with cheap heavy wheels and budget finishing kit! So if you spent £150ish more than me I'm sure you could get it to 27lbs.

If you want for info just ask :)
  • Wow, thanks this is very helpful indeed. The build was going to be 600 max, so thats bang on mfield. Just checking out your build now...

I'll probably have a few questions!

If you went for some second hand parts, and waited abit longer than I did, you could get Deore mechs, lighter pedals etc. for the same price or cheaper. And get a decent pair of wheels - for £600 maybe 28lbs?

    Good weight for that money!
  • Yeah, I was actually looking at the complete deore group for 299 at merlin. Makes things very simple too. :D

  • What about the Be One Karma frame? Chain reaction are selling it for 95.

I would recommend it. But it does require a headset.
BeOne Frame, RockShox Recon, Mavic 719 XT Hubs, Elixr R brakes, floating rotor, SLX Drivetrain.

Yeah a deore groupset would make things easier!

And I have the Avalanche (95% upgraded from stock) very good frame again.

My friend has a BeOne karma, looks nice but quite XC oritentated - doesn't look too strong.
