Hi guys, horrible crunching/grinding noises from my back wheel the other day - a Shimano WH-6500 (9 Speed Ultegra) - taken the hub apart and looks like the freehub bearings are shot. My question is, do I have to buy an Ultegra 6500 freehub to replace it or will other (cheaper) Shimano freehubs fit?

I guess not many people actually swap freehubs of different types that often

I recently removed both the freehubs fitted to my 8/9/10 speed FH6600 (Ultegra) and Deore LX M580 (9 speed) hubs and the back end of both looked exactly the same.

I didn't however swap them over to see if they worked.
Method of removal and connection was the same too.

Not sure if that helps you much.

Your LBS may be the best place, you could even take your old one off and take it down for comparison.
