So it's payday tomorrow and time for a new bit of bling. I feel a bit over reached on my new bike so want to get a sorter stem. I’ve been looking at the FSA OS-99 CS, which IMO looks pretty swanky. Is £130 on a stem a bit excessive? Or does anyone know a cheaper equally nice looking option?

Of course the stem should match the seatpost unless you have an ISP.

    What bars?
  • Cheers, a few to look at there.

Steat post is RC SP-928-G Carbon fibe, seems to be the bog standard one that comes on Bianchi's. The handle bars are Fsa Omega Compact.

£130 is defo too much to spend on a stem then. Around £30 is probably enough.

  • What size you looking for? I have a Ritchey WCS wet black in 100mm on fleabay that may be of interest. Its a decent stem in VGC!

Also have a look on planet x. Last tume I was on there they were selling some FSA ones off cheapish if they still have some.

The FSA OS-99 CSI is substantially heavier than the unwrapped OS-99. Utterly pointless in my opinion. But as redd suggests I'd get a cheap stem, if you are careful in the sales and lucky with size you might even get as low as £15, I picked up a FSA OS-150 for that price recently on CRC. Make sure to check MTB stems, many of them are the same. Put the money saved towards a wheel upgrade or something that actually makes a difference... What tyres are you running now? If they are not the likes of Conti GP4000S, Schwable Ultremo, Michelin Pro Race 3, etc. moving to something like that will make a big difference to your ride. A carbon wrapped stem will make F all.

    highonbikes are very good

I'd go all alloy or all carbon. The wrapped ones are a no-no in my book.

Ritchey are fine. Like I said, Thomson, Syntace, Hope, Ritchey, Easton are all sound. Just go fo rthe one you like the look of or if you're a WW then the lightest.

Fair enough on the wheels so, I will not be suggesting you upgrade to Zeros :)

I have the Ritchey WCS 4-axis on my good road bike; it is a nice looking stem and the design is meant to be good for carbon bars if you ever went that route. I would go for it over the Ritchey Pro Carbon/Alloy one which is probably a fair bit heavier.

If you really want to weight weenie on the stem the alloy FSA-OS99 is a good choice, or cheaper the Planet X stem is very light @105g, £37.

Might be worth trying to keep the cost down until you are 100% sure you have the right length.

Got an OS-99 CSI on my Madone, a good stem I reckon, especially paired with the FSA K-Wing bars

WTF?!? 20 grams? It's a damn site stiffer than the non CSI wet noodle. Far from pointless, it's really really stiff. As stiff as a Thomson but lighter. Looks good too.

Fair enough, I don't have either. I have never had a problem with a noodly stem but then my lightest is the Ritchey WCS I mentioned which is a fair bit heavier (130g I think.)

Not all stems are the same angle. Some are 10 or 6 or 5 degrees etc. This does make a difference to your position. 10 is almost level, 6 sticks up a bit. A 100mm 6 degree stem will be higher than a 10 degree stem of the same length. Also some have a 35 mm collar and some have a 40 mm collar (the clamp round the fork steeer).
