I phoned LBS last week asking about Assos shorts. £110 - £140 was the asking price, I checked my calendar to see if it was 01 April 2010 , it wasnt ,so I went "WHAT !! for a pair of shorts  "

He wasnt kidding so I said not if they line my @rse with diamonds am I shelling out that kinda dough for shorts. I mentioned I was currently using Altura shorts and that didnt go down well , so I asked for something more reasonably priced , but still good

Gore and Castelli shorts were mentioned , sorta 70 quid mark. My full bib is Gore and I find it pretty decent. Whats the thoughts on those shorts and please do suggest other brands that you find to be good performers and not wallet busters.

I think that given the problems you're obviously having with your @rse then you should definitely get the Assos shorts. Have you asked your mum?

Assos is fineif you ride miiiiillllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeesssssss. If you don't, the value wont be worth it. Unless you can just afford them whatever, which you evidently can't (like most of us here).

Gore are great - for anything bike.

    Not had Castelli.

DHB are fine for most use and great value. Santini / link above are great esp if you get the top chamois in a sale pair (old team colours etc...)

Gore and Castelli will both be fine.

You asked us not to mention other brands, but I love my Sportful bib shorts and they were CHEAP because GB Cycles were selling them off. They might have some left.

  • DHB stuff gets good reports (Wiggle own brand - budget type prices) I`ve got the Giordano BodyClone bibs, very good gel insert in `em, also got some Lusso bibs, insert big, blue and bulky but OK on the turbo for 20 miles, just feels like you`ve got a phone directory wedged between yer legs

    Or these??

LBS guy sang the praises of the Assos insert, given the cost of the other materials that go into making their shorts, that insert must have 24 carat gold leaf in it. I fail to see how ANY shorts can be worth 110-140 spondoolies, or is it blatant and unashamed charging for the brand name

Gore is fantastic and so is Santini. I have both and find them comfortable even in long 100m + rides :)

Assos is just the Armani (not Swiss Tony) of the bike world. But it does work! Well!
Far less gay than Rapha, which is just overpriced Euro jolie boy chic (translates as "pants").

    Both camp, mind.

Get DHB or look for a deal on Santini gel/ Giordana.

Rapha has got no Euro connotations mate, its just for brits that got more money than sense. Their sorts are sh1te compared to even standard stuff from Santini. They feel weird, may be its because I am tall and slim.

We are going to get NapD and a lot of proud users of their brand barking about their greatness though.

Rapha is for Brit blitherers, who want to look like faux Belgian toffs on ponce machines.

"Euro chic" describes the faintly cosmopolitan aura of smugness that often manifests in our close continental neighbours, an aura aquired when sporting the Rapha brand.

Sophistication can't be bought, yet too many Sarfarners (and the like), with too much cash, think a bit of Rapha makes then hip cyclo dudes.

View their cravate, purse (think they call it a money puch?), and homoerotic pictures for more.

    A bit clearer?

Well lycra is more valuable than gold by weight (or at least has been recently)...

I do like my lusso pro shorts as well, looking for some nice roubaix 3/4 length ones for the spring though.

    thumbs up for gore

Assos comfort will seem cheap if your in the saddle for hours.. they are better

Rapha is a bit of a joke thou the stuff is quality material

DHB are not all that really...

IME spending £1500 quid + on a bike and skimp on clothing is just plain daft

+1 for Lusso, got two pairs of bib shorts, and look cool with the white seam stitching.

-1000 for Castelli, too short for my taste, mine seem to end halfway up my thigh after a few miles

The charge spoon is cheap but might not suit you as you probably realise by now. There again it may be the saddle you've been searching for ... who knows ..... of course give it a few lengthy rides.

went out riding on it this morning and did a 40 mile jaunt ........damned windy again , when is this cursed wind going to calm down

initial findings were very positive , the spoon is a lot more comfy than the bontrager race lux @rsebreaker i had been using. of course it will take a few rides on it , but for 23 quid , id say it is a wee bargain :D
