Which hardtail for Under £1000

Stipple
Posts: 5
I am thinking of joining the cycle to work scheme, which allows us to spend up to £1000 on a bike. Hard trying to decide to spend around £1000 or around £600-£700 with good frame to upgrade, if I get back into it.
Used to be into mountain biking in a big way when I was younger, but have not done any for the past 10 years.
Have been thinking for past couple years of taking it back up. Mainly used to commute to work, as well as some trails on Purbeck Hills..
The bikes I have been looking at are :
Scott scale 60/50/40.
Specialized rockhopper sl expert/comp
genisis Core 40/30
Proflex 289
Giant Talon 0
Cannodale Trail Sl 2
Felt Q820
Orange GS 3
GT Avalanche 1.0 Disc
Any Help would be appreciated..

Allow me to add another to the list of potentials and I probably won't be the last to suggest it....Boardman Pro (assuming you can buy from Halfords).
The hardtail is £999.99 and for the price, you'll struggle to beat it spec wise.
However, depending on your commuting/trail balance, you may not want to be riding a £1000 bike into work (securty issues?).2010 Specialized Stumpjumper FSR Expert Carbon
2014 De Rosa R848
Carrera TDF Ltd Commuter0 -
Boardman wins on spec and value.2006 Giant XTC
2010 Giant Defy Advanced
2016 Boardman Pro 29er
2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
2017 Canondale Supersix Evo0 -
The Boardmans is the bike i wanted unfortunately my work won't let us use Halford, we can only deal with www.wheelies.co.uk. So limited to the bikes that they sell.
I know the orange bikes are good, but they are a bit more heavy than Scotts and Specialized.0 -
In that case I`d go with a Rockhopper.Nice frame, reasonable kit for the money.
If you decide to upgrade again in a year or so Rockhoppers are always easy to sell on too.
Can`t really go wrong!2006 Giant XTC

You can't go wrong with a Rockhopper0

The above advice is good (Boardman and Spesh). From your list at Wheelies the Scott is likely to be the quickest commuter. I had a Scott Reflex and it flew. Personally I'd take the Core because it's got an adjustable fork. 85mm for commuting or 130mm for some full on trail centre/off road fun!!
Good luck dude.Dream as if you'll live forever..........live as if you'll die today!0 -
allow me to mix things up a bit:
carrera titan, as good spec as the boardman but carbon frame - £1k
carrera zelos, same spec and price as the titan but full bouncer with carbon front triangle
decathlon rockrider 8.2, same-ish spec as the boardman pro but only £750. Very nice frame too0 -
Carrera are Halfords only, which I think the OP said were excluded.2006 Giant XTC
2010 Giant Defy Advanced
2016 Boardman Pro 29er
2016 Pinnacle Lithium 4
2017 Canondale Supersix Evo0 -
And the Rockrider is only Decathlon AFAIK so bit of an epic fail on that one.0

Rock Lobster Tig Team SL (alu) or 853 (steel) from Merlin Cycles. Great bikes, great spec.0

Wheelies.co.uk only!!!0

i have been looking around and i think that the boardman team or pro are unbeatable on spec but i do not know the weights of any other bikes .please can you say the weights of other bikes0

Good for you! When I last had a commute, I would bike to work as often as I could.
Out of your list, these would be the Top 3 that I'd test ride:
Scott scale 60/50/40
Felt Q820
Orange GS 30
