Volvo V50 roof bars ..................

I've acquired a V50 with roof rails and want to fit some roof bars to take my Thule bike carriers, the type where you remove front wheel and secure the bike to the carrier by the front forks.
There are two options on the roof rck cross bars - one type sits on top of the roofrails, and the pukka Volvo ones that sit between the roof rails.
Does anyone know if the latter type will take two bikes/carriers, as the bars are shorter than the 'on top' type bars, and I'm concerned that there is not enough width to accomodate two bikes without the handlebars interefring with each other. If you see what I mean!

I would have thought easily enough - especially if you mount one carrier backwards ? So bars up to saddle as if you were parking at a cafe stop ?0
