Another "which bike" question

Good morning and apologies for yet another "which bike" question. My son had his Trek 1400 flat bar racer stolen a couple of months ago and I am looking at replacing it. He wants something suitable for a daily 10 mile round trip student commute in London but also for longer weekend and holiday rides. He took the Trek over to Spain last summer and did around 2,000 kms so looking for a comfortable long distance bike as well. I think his preference now is for drop bars and my budget is around the £850- £1k mark. We looked at a Specialized Secteur Elite 2010 which he liked but would be very grateful for other suggestions. The bike needs to be able to take a rack . Many thanks in advance, Charles
