Snapped Cage 105 Rear Mech

Whilst out today, the chain suddenly wouldn't go round - after having a further look I found this!
The bike was bought at the start of Nov 2008, so it's about 14 months old. I estimate it's done about 1500 miles. Surely this shouldn't happen?
Do I have any comeback with shimano/the bikeshop (I bought it from winstanleys bikes over the net).
If I can't get a replacement from the shop - is it worth £15 extra for an Ultegra 6700 over a 105?
Cheers!

TBH after a year I think you might be out of luck. Worth giving them a polite phone call though, you never know.
Derailleurs are much of a muchness. The 105 unit is pretty good. I reckon yours must have had a whack at some point to fail like that, the derailleur isn't really under any load in that area.

I think it's a bit of a weird failure. Definitely hasn't had any sort of impact as I've been really careful with the bike and I haven't crashed it or dropped it etc and I'm careful when leaning it not to rest it on the rear mech!
Will give them a call first thing on Mon to see what they say!0 -

do both jockey wheels still spin..? I'm wondering if the lower one might have siezed...??0

Bizarrely I had a very similar incident this morning. I was sprinting to set off a speed camera  and the gears suddenly went crunch and seized. The mech side cage plate had sheared and the whole assembly twisted.
Sam, you could probably get a replacement for the cage plate that you snapped as it's just an allen key job to replace yours. Try the distributors Madison, or Petra cycles who sell Shimano spares. Mine went on the other side that's press fitted onto the mech, so not so easy for me.0 -
thing is something could have flipped into the chian without you knowing and got yanked across it. even a stone. any production run of anything have failure rates. just been unlucky.dont right 105 off. my soras done over 3thou mile trough all weather.0

Yeah, both jockey wheels still spin freely. I just stuck it in a gear and managed to cycle the 8 miles home without changing gear. The other cage plate is slightly bent as a result, so I'll probably just get a new mech so I can get back on the bike by wed (post dependant!)0

I think Reddragon is right. That's straightforward fatigue failure. Not your fault, but mechs are cheap. Get a new one and keep this in your "broken bits" collection. (you have one of those?!)0

Have just found that shimano warranty is for 2 years (3 years on dura-ace and XTR)
see here: http://cycle.shimano-eu.com/publish/con ... rranty.pdf
So I'll get a new ultegra mech so I can ride my bike and then get shimano to replace the part (or replace the whole mech?) on my 105 and keep it as spare or sell it?
Otherwise I imagine I'll be waiting for weeks for the claim to be verified, part to be shipped/fitted etc etc!0 -

Sorry, edited my above post as you quoted it!
Have decided to get shimano to pay for my new plate. Just need to get it verified in the LBS.0
