Hi,new to this mountain bike stuff,i have seen a giant yukon fx2 for £425 at pauls cycles http://www.paulscycles.co.uk/products.p ... 1b4s1p1747 and wondered if it is a decent bike.I want it for off road trails mainly follow the dog on cannock chase, and similar type stuff, nothing too serious although i do like the odd jump, takes me back to my BMX days of the 80s.Anyway would this bike be a good option,or would a carrera fury/decathlon rockrider hardtail be a better buy .What else is worth considering?i dont want to spend over £500 but i would prefer full suspension if possible. Thanks, the bars open.

  • TBH FS bikes around £500 (even in the sales) are not going to be much good, pretty poor in fact. I would go for a hardtail. It has a poor fork and a poor rear shock with quite low-end components.

If your heart is set on a FS, I would consider spending a bit more, this is a good buy, a very capable frame and at a silly price:

I would avoid a FS frame for your budget.

You would be silly to spend £500 on a bike and then put up with Dart 2s and an Alivio Drivetrain

You can get much better components on most (even some of the cheapest) of the Rockrider bikes IMO.

A Fury would be brilliant for Follow the Dog. I've got a Boardman HT, so probably less 'burly' than the Fury, and it copes with it absolutely fine. In fact, I sit here looking at full sus bikes, then go and ride mine at Cannock Chase and end up thinking that it's absolutely flawless, and a full sus would be a waste of money there!

Not for some I know, I don't want to start that argument.

But I think you'd be better off with a decent hardtail than a low end FS, admittedly from a decent manufacturer.

OK,thanks for the replies,i appreciate what you are saying about the cheaper fs bikes, that gt does look nice but it is way more than i can afford to spend. So do you all agree the carrera fury and rockrider are good value, and capable bikes?are there any other good £500 ers worth looking at?i have an old specialized hard rock at the moment but i feel its a bit small for me,17" i think,it also has very poor rst forks and v brakes and i want discs. Thanks for the input.

If you don't mind a 500 quid bike that is spec'd like a 300 quid HT then that is not a bad bike. But as said you could get a bike with solo air Tora's on the front for the same money.

As well as the Halfords specials I'd look at:
Marin B-17 which is a good jumpy HT 09s
or the Spesh Rockhopper Comp-disc which are Deore/tora spec'd

09s are in that price range.

Or if you want full sus - then maybe keep an eye out on ebay for a high end used one that will go for around that sort of money once 2 years old

There's a very well rated Boardman FS that's £800, if the budget is flexible, I appreciate it's a big jump though.

Otherwise, yes, those are two very good choices. There's a review of the Fury here.

  • or try merlin and their Malt 1, they had a special deal a little while ago, £899 down to £450 or something I think.
