New wheelset............New cassette / chain?

I've just ordered myself the Halo Mercury wheelset to use on Sportives and Sunday best. I've also ordered myself a new cassette and chain, as advice has told me to replace the chain at the same time as the cassette.

The question I have is "Do i need to replace the cassette on the current rear wheel to go with the nice new chain, or is running the current one fine? I will still be using the old wheels on the turbo and for training"

Thanks

Really depends on the wear on the old cluster - if the cluster's teeth are getting a hook then replace the cassette, otherwise leave it at least until you start getting out on the new wheels.

Old chains wear new sprockets out fast, but the reverse is not true. You can use a new chain on worn sprockets without any risk of accelerated chain wear. When a sprocket is worn out, the chain will skip over it under forceful pedalling. This is a disconcerting feeling, but if you inspect the sprockets you'll notice that they're visibly worn –hooked as Bugly says– before it gets to that point. If they look even roughly like new, they're fine, probably for the life of the chain.
