Old bike, new bits

I mostly ride MTB but have an old Puch road biked for when its really wet. I find the gearing very high for the moors around here and want to reduce it. I'm thinking of replacing the chainset 52/48 with something smaller but all the smaller square tapers seem to be 8spd or bigger. As my rear derailleur is only 6 spd will they fit? I need to keep this cheap as the expense of changing everything else is just not worth it. ANy ideas?

An 8 speed chainset will be fine. You should be able to move and adjust your present front mech to facilitate changing.
