Failing at maths

Anyone very bored and want to make themselves feel good by giving me a little maths help? I just need a bump in the right direction with these equations i.e. what is the first step?
(1 + tan θ)(5 sin θ -2) = 0
4 sin x = 3 tan x
(1 + tan θ)(5 sin θ -2) = 0
4 sin x = 3 tan x

5 Sin ?

Second one's easy. tan=sin/cos
4sinx=3sinx/cosx
4=3/cosx
cosx=3/4
x = 0.723 radians
First one I'm missing something... Gimme a minute.0 -

Ahhh so thats what SIN COS and TAN are for on the calculator .. My maths lessons where spent writing something along the lines of "Log in COS A.B Is 9AY"
I was the master at calculator words ... I somehow managed to scrape a A at GCSE though0 -
What I was missing on the first one: My brain.
Set each bracket in turn to 0, and you'll get the 2 solutions for theta.0 -

Argh! Annoyinly easy in the end. Thanks very much!"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0 -
Sorry to ask again, but i have C1 and C2 papers tomorrow so this is my last shot to get things sorted!
I hate logs, with a passion.
these logs are all in base 2, i just can't do subscript on here
log 32 + log 16
= log x
log x
I got as far as putting the 32 and 16 as a single log, got stuck after that..."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0 -

Give me a Maths/Further Maths A level, get me into Uni to do some sort of maths-sciencey degree. ALthough to be fair, i will probably never use log equations in 'real life'."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0 -
Fair do's and good luck pal.
I can't say I've used my A-Level maths since my first year of Uni tbh, but you've got to do it unfortunately.0 -
Which type of log?

It takes as much courage to have tried and failed as it does to have tried and succeeded.

Ok, I'm rusty on logs, but I'll give it a go...
First, rearrange so that log32 + log16 = (logx)^2
As we're in base 2, log32 = 5 and log16 = 4, so LHS = 9
(logx)^2 = 9
logx = 3
x = 2^3
x = 8
That looks about right...0 -
And also as logx could be -3, x could equal 1/8?
Beautiful, thanks for your help!"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0 -
Ooh AS level maths? Good luck!0

Yep! I'm doing AS and A2 maths this year, then further maths next year (although some modules cross over and it gets all confoozing). And thanks!"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0 -

I lasted 1 month in AS maths ... Take my hat off to you0 -

I should have done further maths... but I didn't like maths at all when I started my A levels! (I don't really like it now, but it's palatable)0 -
talking of logs, i despatched what can only be described as an earth shattering one about 20mins ago. Almost felt compelled to give it a military send off! :oops:thekickingmule wrote:Which type of log?

Had C1 and C2 this morning, both went very well! I'm thinking 100% in both if not then very close. Once again, thanks for the help."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0

Physics. After UTTERLY ballsing up my A levels.0
-
I'm trying to make sure I get through mine without such balls ups, not looking hopeful for Thursday's physics module though! Sub atomic particles, hmm yeahh. And electricity, which we have not been taught half of and is my least favourite part of physics anyway. Can't wait to get onto the mechanics bits!"Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0
-
Sub atomic particles at AS level really is easy. Remember your quark properties and you're basically done... Can work out properties of particles depending on what quarks are in them, or what quarks are in them from their properties (you'll generally be given one of the two, it's normally a table with properties and quark composition). Remember what meson, baryon, hadron etc mean.
Electricity's an arsehole though, I still hate it. Mechanics is unbelievably easy once you get onto that.0 -
Yeah i can do the sub atomic stuff, it's just i dislike the fact that i am expected to accept principles that have no rational explaination.
I did the CEA Ad Maths GCSE, A level machanics barely goes beyond that! And i'll have finished M2 in Maths before we even start it in physics..."Melancholy is incompatible with bicycling." ~James E. Starrs0 -
