I require a 10 speed cassette for my EA90SL rear wheel it has to be shimano.
I have 105 on the original wheel, but want to keep them as well.
Should I go 105 again or should I try Dura-Ace or Ultegra?

Online Prices for
105 around £35 5600
Ultegra around £45 less if 6600
Dura-Ace around £120 more for 7900

Apart from the use of titanium and the small weight saving Dura-Ace price is a big barrier!
Will I gain better shifting on Ultegra compared to 105?

What would you buy? all opinions welcomed.

Cheers

  • Well, im using 105 with no complaints, but might give Ultegra a pop next simply due to the fact its not much money.

Dont think I could drop over a ton on DA!

  • I think from 105 up the only benifit you get is reduced weight and maybe a higher quality product. If you've got the money get the Ultegra, otherwise get the 105. If you're a world class athelete (with a sponsor) get the Dura Ace.

  • Actualy, last post makes me sound like a boring tight fisted old sod. There is a certain bling factor to Dura Ace, but would anyone else notice? Only if they looked very carefully.....

Well, I'd vote for Dura Ace, but in reality the extra cost ain't really worth it I guess.

Having said that I've bought one from here:

If you want the 12-23 this is a cheap deal, (that's what I bought). Shipping can be expensive from them though, so best to buy a few more bits to even the cost out. CHeck their prices on Park Tools... VERY reasonable.

The best Shimano cassette? The Sram Red Powerdome cassette. :)

Works with Shimano and is lighter and stronger.

I changed my 105 12-25 for an Ultegra 12-27 and noticed ABSOLUTELY NO DIFFERENCE in shifting performance whatsoever. The only noticable difference was, not surprisingly, the ease with which I could turn the 27t!!

If you are happy with the 105 cassette, get another. The weight saving between the two ranges is also next to nothing and that was wiped out entirely in my case because of the move to a physically larger cassette.

Now, upgrading from a 105 to Ultegra rear mech DID provide noticable improvements in shifting performance - much crisper, snappier, assured etc.

My opinion mirrors yours Squill. You obviously have 3 choices in the range bottom starting range with 105 middle with Ultegra and top with DA.

While there doesn't seem to be much difference between 105 and Ultegra, which seems to bear out in the small price difference.
As for DA the step up in price is big!

Rather than asking which is the "best" I should have posted a poll for which cassette would you "Buy"?

Maybe if I try ultegra only i can say after experience was it worth?

    Cheers

The word BEST sure opens a can of worms. The best for me has always been one made of steel as opposed to titanium or aluminum. They last longer and are less expensive(generally speaking) and I can't recall having any problems with this theory.
