Can you convert a hybrid boardman to a road?

Hi people,

I'm asking on behalf of a friend (no seriously!) :D

He's got a boardman team 'hybrid' bike and is looking to get a road bike instead (as he plans to enter some Triathlons with said bike)

The question is, is it a viable option for him to convert this hybrid into a race bike or is it not possible/practical or economical?

I've only seen his bike a few times, but I know that its got disc brakes. Does anyone know if you can convert this setup to a calipers one or indeed can you get a normal gear/brake lever to work with these disc brakes on a dropped set of bars?

Cheers and thanks,

Dru.

Not really practical. The top (virtual horizontal) tube length of the hybrid is longer than the road one. On a medium it is 59cm against 55.5cm. This would mean using a much shorter stem which affects handling. If, as I think, he has hydraulic brakes the whole job becomes uneconomical. For Triathlons he could just fit tri-bars to the hybrid. He may need to lower the bars as well. This would work until he gets serious then a new bike is in order.

Its a pain in the ass and pricey to convert to drops. I'd go for tribars on the flat bars.

Andy Wilkinson blitzes the bike leg of Triathlons on his MTB bike with skinny wheels and tribars.

It would be easier to sell the bike on here or ebay and use the money (plus any extra he was going to use for changing the bars etc) to buy a road bike. (again on here or ebay)

I'll go with this train of thought.
Conversion is not practical, or economical.
Possibly keep hybrid for commuting/ pub bike...
