hi. i am after a new bike but i thought i might build one using parts sourced from ebay. my bike is "ok" at the moment but sooner or later it will need replacing so i could do with getting a bike soon. so what do you think? great or not so great idea?

i also have seen quite a few people on here with these. what are they like to ride? thanks

and i have £600 at the moment so this seems like a good starting point regarding money. also this will be my fisrt build so any tips welcome

i'll be getting the 16" one and also thats what i can afford so i'm not too bothered abbout weight really as my current bike weighs about 40lbs

What sort of bike are you after?

an AM that can take some abuse but is suitable for XC riding too. about 140mm travel, and i'm not too bothered about weight but i wouldn't buy a frame that is 10lbs

Just keep in mind that build costs can spiral out of controll if you don't plan everything first. It depends what tools you've got, so you may need to budget fo headset press, bottom bracket tools, etc. or the labour costs for an lbs to do it for you.

All the little things add up too, cables (inner, outer and ends), grease/lube.

Of course you can save a fortune buying second hand like you say, but at the same time there are the pitfalls, if stuff doesn't work chances are you won'tget your money back, and any parts that need work (brakes bleeding, new bolts etc.) can be a drain on funds.

Building's a great crack, but be prepared to spend more than you budget

thanks. my bike is still running and as i said i have £600 so i'll buy most stuff now and during the next few months and also i'll be happy if i finish building in about july. also i'm 13(14 in march) so i don't have to worry about not being able to buy things because i have to pay taxes etc. and once again thanks for the tips

thats my stab at it - will try and get pic from phone up later today. Merlin have a deal where you get an extra 10% off at the moment - that means deore gruppo for £166 (sell the v-brakes) and avid discs for £121 - xero wheels are strong for £90 from woolly hat shop, you can pick up an outland bar/stem/grip 31.8mm combo for £22 and there are always deals to be had on forks etc!

Hey mate, i have the geared version inbred in white and run a 130mm revo fork on it and absolutely love it. It is a touch heavy but you dont notice it and it feels light compared to my old lighter alu frame if that makes sense. I've built mine using solid mid range components such as xt gears, lx cranks and crossride wheels and it feels solid on all the trails i ride, glentress, innerleithen, laggan etc. Would def reccomend them as a budget frame but as stated build costs can spiral. Mine cost over a grand to build once i HAD to upgrade stuff

The wheels and fork are overpriced for used stuff, and the brakes are cheaper at Merlin.

You might want to consider a groupset with wheels to maximise savings:

nice on SS i might sell the brakes and buy the avids. would the steerer tube be about 200mm as it's brand new?

185mm steerer, be wary. Might be ok with the 16inch, but I'd pay a little more and get the updated 2010 Race which is lighter and stiffer with the new Powerbulge lowers.

actually i will buy the forks later on. right now i'll buy the groupset and wheel,frame,headset and then the forks and rest of the stuff.
