all you need is a cheap 8 speed chain then....something like this
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... ModelID=81
or this
http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=21295
just take your old chain off and measure it against the new one, you may well need a chain breaker to break the links if you don't already have one, and a powerlink will be useful to easily connect the links0 -
Never used anything other than XT/XTR. Fit, forget.0

personally i'm not a fan of shimano chains, had a few snap on me, i much prefer SRAM or KMC0

HG73 is XT, HG93/7701 is XTR/Dura-Ace. There's no difference apart from £5 and the zinc plating on the XTR roller plates.0

dont do anything other than sram chains, shimano work well while there not broke wich is not very often, and kmc is the biggest pile of cack iver fitted, dont brake just rust like the titanic and shifting is dire.0

Hi, I am looking for a new chain as my old one has become rusty, I currently have a Shimano chain and I have an 8 speed cassette, I am not sure on the make of the cassette but I would guess that it was shimano as most of the transmission components are shimano. If its possible I would like to purchase a rustless one as the area I live in has a very salty atmosphere as the winds come staight off the Atlantic here. 8sp sram pref a high spec one that has a coating to prevent rust.0

Would this be ideal? Its the only sram chain I can find that has any kind of coating. Not sure of nickel plating was what you mean't though? Bit confused! lol

Maybe you used a very cheap one. Maybe you just didn't look after it. It's one of the two, most KMCs are great. The X9L and SL are fantastic chains, and the X8 I've got on my commuter is almost as good.Uncompromising extremist0 -

I have the 9-speed equivalent of this chain (PC-971) and while the nickle-plated outer plates won't rust, the inner plates, and especially the pins, will. You can get this: http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Mode ... elID=22192 which plates the inner plates as well, but the pins still look the same.
I know KMC markets some "rust-resistant" chains, but I have no experience of them. In the end it may just come down to making sure that your chain always has a coat of lube.
Cheers,

it was a x9, i gave it a mate when he got stuck with a broken chain it was to the bin for him too after a short ride.0 -
No wonder if it was already knackered :?Uncompromising extremist0

the chain had a total of about 50 mile before it seen the bin.
if its nackerd after 50 mile then best avoided.0 -
The 951 is a good budget chain. Buy a few, look after them and change earlier than usually and you'll get far more life than one expensive chain.0
