Frozen Forks

This is my first winter of mountain biking and I learnt something new this weekend.

I made the mistake of loading my bike into my car Friday night in preparation for an early start on Saturday morning, big mistake...

When I got to the start of the ride and set my bike up it was -8 deg and my front fork had frozen up solid, it didn't budge for the whole 2 hour ride.

Also my water bladder pipe froze solid and my water bottle turned to slush. :lol:

Great fun though

    Aparently, if you mix a good amount of vodka into whatever energy drink you have in your Camelbak type drinking device, it doesn't freeze...

    i had frozen forks too. all it needed was to go fast and hit a curb. i think i might have damaged them actually :oops:

    I have a a five litre bottle of water in the back of my car, 3/4 full.

    Well, I should should say had. I now have a five litre bottle of solid ice.

    i had my forks stiffen up to almost solid for the last hour of a 4 hour ride on saturday but worst of all was the rear mech froze solid in top and it took ages to thaw it out throughly spoilling the downhill sections!

    It's an amazing cure-all, pee. Works for jellyfish stings, frozen bikes... The list is endless. Didn't Madonna used to bottle and drink hers? Also makes an excellent 50 Cent repellant.

    The only things that stopped working for me today were my camera and my haribos.

    sure the booze wont freeze, but the water will...ever put vodka in the freezer?

    just fill with straight vodka....forthewin.

    I know all about the frozen camelback now!
    My front mech shifter died the other day and was stuck in the largest ring and the rear mech froze in the smallest cog, needless to say hills were fun and I shant ever be buying a singlespeed after all that, gears are nice!!

    Just pee in your camelbak bladder too.

    Actually, no, don't. What you should do, is blow the water back into the reservoir- the pipe will freeze up fast but the reservoir won't because of its size and because it's constantly sploshing around. It can still freeze but it probably won't.

    No just on his wobble board, stops it from rusting.

    A cure to frozen camelback hose is to re-route the hose directly from where it exits the top of the CB and take it straight into your clothing at neck level and snake it around till it's in front of your chest, one clothing layer from your skin. You will have to stop and unzip your jacket to access it but it will never freeze, Alternativley if you want the hose exposed just drain the hose after each drink by holding the bite valve up high and squeezing it so the water runs back into the bladder, no water = no freeze 8) , or if you have a water bottle place it upside down in the cage to help offset freezing of the mouthpiece. So much advice so little time :roll:
