Riding in the wet ******** up my bike.

Hi.

Well I can't help noticing that towards the end of the ride, the bike feels sluggish, I know what you're thinking, "well at the end of the ride it's YOU who will be sluggish", well I know that, but the bike seems to feel abit rough, cranks stiff, feels like the wheels are abit sluggish too. I've got back, and turning the cranks with my hands I feel alot more resistance. I'm pretty sure this never used to happen.

Could it be water in the BB and all that? Or possibly a sign I use the wrong lube (Finish Line Cross Country)

It's you not the bike, really it is.

If it's proper pissing down you are likely to be a few Kg heavier, and the rain will mentally and physically fatigue you more than would happen in the dry.

    Could your BB be knackered?

Finish Line Cross Country is the right lube for this time of year.

Just cycle hypochondria Will. You have had it for years.
The most that can be happening is the chain is gaining friction but if properly lubed this will not happen. If you have water in the BB it would soon start letting you know. They sound horrible.

If it goes away by the start of the next ride then it must be you.

It's probably the mental effects of fatigue, I often get the feeling at the end of a tough ride where I just hate it and all I want to do is stop.... and start to think things like "I'm sh1t, I can't even get up this hill fast, i'm too slow to race" etc etc And then 30 minutes afterwards I can't wait to get back out.

Unless you ride a ribble sportive? Mine fills with water when it's raining hard. |Must have tipped 2 pints out the first time it happened  I think it gets in down the seat tube.

Well I've cleaned it, all seems lovely and smooth again, apart from some ringing scratching noise coming from the rear hub.
  • Storage ****** up my bike.

Seriously! I have found that the longer I leave my bike in the garage, the slower it gets. This despite judicious oiling and maintenance. The effect seems to worsen with low temperatures, e.g. after only three weeks of storage over the Christmas break, it'll hardly go up the gentlest of hills and rides like a slug on the flat.

    I'm going full carbon...

Sounds good to me. Does a carbon bike keep you fit when it's in the garage? That's what I really, really need :)

If you want a REALLY good lube at this time of year the new wet lube from Juice Lubes is AMAZING!

Cornering confidence generally increases with time and experience. This pattern continues until it falls sharply and suddenly.
