Tyres for mud

Okay, so the mags are all running features about riding through winter, and how you should change your tyres for suitable rubber...
It seems, from these features, that tyres suitable for winter gloop are narrow, to cut through the gunge.
So, when I spot the Maxxis ' Swampthing' tyre advert, it seems to emphasize the balloon-like size of the 2.5 tyres... I'm confused now...
The theory of narrow tyres cutting throuigh mud seems sound, but look at all the big fat tyres on off-road buggies....

The Maxxis swampthing at 2.5 was designed for DH.
If you are riding XC then the narrow tyre is correct.
Some like a wider mud tyre then they use swampthings as most other mud tyres only come in narrow sizes. Now where's that "Get Out of Crash Free Card"0
