well having been a shed load of cash for my 18th b'day time to buy a new bike :D finally

long story short i want a 514 but my dad reckons i should buy a 314 and upgrade it as stuff wears out, but i see a few flaws with that idea,1 the 314 hasnt got a propedal or FIT 15mm fork and hasnt got tubless rims. which would be better bearing in mind the 514 is 700quid more and will need bits replacing after a while ......

Arrrrrrrrrghhhhh noooooooooooo - the 514 is better value and you won't be able to make a 514 out of a 314 for £700. Tell Dad what you really need is a 714 but you are willing to compromise and settle for a 514. Aim high, shoot low etc

    514 deffo

who wants the entry level model?
Everything in moderation ... except beer
Beer in moderation ... is a waste of beer

If riding an XC race bike is like touching the trail,
then riding a rigid singlespeed is like licking it
... or being punched by it, depending on the day

Obviously not him as he hasn't mentioned the 214

Go 514 if possible, just a pity the 314 is the better looking bike this year!

    :)

Oh, and the 514 gets my vote.. I personally prefer the colour scheme of the 514 too.

I'd have the 514 if it were possible, but for the carbon rear end and better rear shock. Saying that, I rarely use pro-pedal on my Meta and would much prefer a plain Float R to my RP2. My Mojo has a standard Float R for the same reason. I'm not sure how the Zesty rides without platform damping sadly due to Lapierre not having XL bikes in their test fleet, probably good having the choice :)

I'm not a fan of the XT factory wheels either and were it mine I'd be flogging them straight off and getting my own on. They're the 15mm axle versions though, hopefully the internals will differ slightly to the M775 QR version.

The rest all seems very solid.

thanks guys im thinkin 514 too :D

toasty, im also abit skeptical about the wheels, love the fact they're tubeless but i just hate shimano hubs  they are evil and i have a habit of eating them.... and as for looks i prefer the 514 personally but i can see why some people wouldnt like it.
  • i chose the 314 as that was as far as my budjet went, but i personally prefer the look of the 314. dosent look much on a computer screen but looks much better in the flesh
    It`s changed a bit since...
