firstly, i wish to point out this is not a lets get a certain member re-instated thread.

I don't condone his actions and i am totally with the mod's/admin in their actions. Young children can access this site so they need to be protected and posting malicious threads with URL's etc is wrong on so many levels.

My point is, it seems that "certain member" seems to have more comebacks than Mike Tyson!

i have known in past from other forums the guilty members have had their IP address banned thus preventing them re-entering a forum under another alias. i am guessing from the last few days a certain member has been re-appearing under different aliases. Albeit the aliases are very close to his original forum name (doh him!)

Surely this person when banned is banned (permanently) and cannot re-enter under different aliases?

Thoughts....?

Although not fool proof IP capture from registration can be used to check if a banned member is re-registering.

Although these are easily masked by using an IP spoofer. Google it, its very simple.

Or he might have access to other computers at different addresses - school, office, friends' houses, internet cafe etc etc etc

Traditionally, we never used to ban by IP as certain ISPs put all of their users on to the same IP. Ban one, ban all. In addition, it is very simple to roll your IP, meaning it's not a long-term proposition. If you ban by host, then you have the problem of restricting access to other sharing the host. Not a problem for small sites, but on a site with over a 100,000 registered members, you'd have overlaps that would restrict innocent users.

Hence, the preferred method is good quality pro-active moderation. Ban the username and email. Wait for them to attempt to re-register, ban them again. Eventually they do give up.
  • if hes a clever troll, he would have masked his ip address in the first place.
also if he gets angry i heard he could take down the forum and sell it to dirt magazine.

I don't think that the moderating team are going to have a problem here.

Masking your IP address is a civil right and can be done using a proxy server.

    It is certainly NOT illegal.

Did they also tell you that doing the "Ali G Clicky Thing" with your fingers gives you finger problems ?

Of course they will tell you that ... It annoys them as you are bipassing their security and possiblly opening the network up to threats ... Its also against most Schools usage policy so be careful

i never use them. its not worth getting caught. plus people only use them to get on gamnes sites which dont interest me. and also to get onto face book and bebo and other stuff which doesnt interest me.
  • Ifit's a dynamic IP he's on (e.g. Virgin does this) all he needs to do is turn off his modem for a while (can be for any length of time really...depends if someone else on VM network is leased the IP) then he gets a new ip to use and no ban. Only way to stop is to ban anyone on Virgin media IPs

Didn't you once ban everyone using AOL?

Perfectly justified if you ask me. Serves them right...
