Cold Feet

In the topic of cold weather riding I've noticed that the only covered part of my anatomy getting cold at the moment are my toes.
I'm wearing
Endura Thermolight socks
Specialized Elite Rd shoes (vents taped)
Endura Road overshoes

and my toes still feel like ice.

No, my shoes aren't too tight and restricting bloodflow..tried all that and there's lots of room.
As the colder weather approaches and the memories of last winters "frozen family jewels "will be an icy reminder soon no doubt & with no cure for that, can anyone recommend something that will help keep my feet warm?
I've even thought of electricly heated fishing socks  but if there is something more cycle friendly ....

  • m8 same socks, giving same problem, I upgrading my socks to my Bridgedale med walking sock, and all is well so far, althought I am not so sure they will cope when it gets proper cold, as moving at an ave of 20 Mph that gives a -9 degrees to the ambient temp, (ish). I read a coment on this a wee while back and it was mentioned that socks and over boots are a waste of time and the only way fwd was a winter shoe/boot. Me thinks that may be correct.

I ride all Winter and used to suffer from cold feet.

The combo that works for me is:

    Woolie Boolie socks
Normal shoes (Sidi Ergo Carbon 2)
    Pro Tarmac NPU neoprene overshoes.

Kept my feet toasty warm even after the snow last Winter.

Being able to wiggle toes isn't always a good measure that your shoes aren't to tight. I was convinced my shoes were fine - I worn them for years , and then cold foot struck. I tried all sorts , socks, pedals, insoles - in the end someowhere I read that your feet can change shape with age. I brought some wide shoes , a size larger than normal - problem solved

A pal of mine uses some gel insert that keeps his feet warm for a while. Someone will know what it is....

  • It may depend on your own bodies ability to cope with cold. All I wear is a normal pair of umbro ankle socks, dhb d1 mtb shoes and aldi overshoes. Even when soaking wet I don't get cold feet. Its not like its not been cold either here in the pennines.

  • it is about keeping the wind out. neoprene overshoes, gore-tex boots.

then make sure you're not wearing the shoes too tight. Also, remember feet swell a little with exercise, so if you're on a long ride stop after 30 mins and re-adjust for the swell.
  • BBB Winter grade overshoes and Sealskinz Light waterproof socks . Toasty :)

(and make sure your shoes arn`t too tight with thicker socks, I`ve got "summer" shoes and "winter" shoes now, one size larger to accomodate the thicker socks when it`s cold)

In many cases cold extremities are caused by cooling core body temperatures. Make sure your body is really warm then work on the extremities. You will be surprised how much difference it makes.

    I use Endura MT500 overshoes.

Actually made for MTB, but this means they have rubber covering the toes along with thick neoprene and a more hardwearing base.

Did 35 miles today using standard socks, vented tri shoes and these. Feet were very warm.

In this weather, for me, like anyone else, normal shoes and socks = v.cold toes. The mere addition of some bullet proof, no-name neoprene overboots that cost a tenner off ebay = v.warm feet.

I find it also depends how warm my feet /body is to start with as well.

The commute in i am fine even though it is colder.Last hour at work i am normally in an unheated warehouse on a fork truck so i am cold before i start so the feet feel it very quickly.

As of this week I've started wearing those trainer ankle socks under my Endura Thermolites. Marginally better than before.
I may still get some merino wool cycling socks as I've just worn my Endura BAABAA LS baselayer for the first time today and that kept me very warm all ride :D
