The reason i can't decide is because the Boardman could have a wheel problem, i don't think they have sorted this out and i wont be able to afford new wheels for a good few months after the purchase so if they're rubbish i'm stuffed. And i am not sure if i want to buy a bike with 105 on it because i've heard that we're due a new 105 soon and i don't want outdated kit (i know it's still very good though)
anybody got opinions on these bikes, which one you would get?
also are there any other carbon bikes for £1000, i have already looked at ribble and dont really fancy one.

  • From what I have read, the issues with the wheels on the Boardman have been sorted and were on early 09 models.

I was planning on using mine until I ended up finding EA90SL's for a bargin price..
  • Cannot comment on the others but I've just got my Ltd Ed Team Carbon. Took it straight to my LBS for a check and they wanted to see it as not had their hands on one before.
The guy in there said he was very impressed and that he'd be happy with everything except for maybe the stem and seat post which I'll be looking to change soon. He said the wheels were good and not to bother changing them unless I wanted to.
The wheel problem you speak of was a problem with the spoke nipples not being tightened enough which has been addressed by the wheel builders/Halfords. My set up of the bike was pretty spot on, couple of very minor adjustments. Highly recommended from me.

  • So have you had any problems with your wheels then?
also how much have you ridden it?
Also just a general question here, does the boardman come with the vittoria tyres as mentioned on the boardman website or the conti tyres as the halfords website says?

  • I'll confirm in the morning as it's in the garage, but I'm fairly sure that it's got Vittoria tyres on it.
TBH, I've not given it a good ride yet, been working late/night shifts and it's always dark when I'm up. Off tomorrow and hoping to get out for a good ride/set up ride (sort saddle height position, handlebar position, adjust gear cables etc if any stretching from 'pressured' use rather than just a hand spin on the set up rack in Halfords.)
I thought long and hard about how to spend my £1,000 C2W voucher and I did a lot of research on here and other sites. The reviews and other feedback from riders of the non Ltd carbon had me convinced that this was the best bike for the money. I was able to take it for a test ride which fully convinced it for me. I'll report back once I've got it fully set up and ridden it for a bit, but have a search on here for 'Boardman Team Carbon' and you'll find what you need to know.

  • Now been out for an inaugural 10 mile test ride. Seperate post in the beginners section so won't repeat all of my thoughts, but suffice to say 'WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'
Love it. Having been on a old borrowed steel Dawes, with 52/42 front chain rings, this was like going from a Corsa to a Ferrari. Quick, light, responsive, gears very quick, smooth and quiet - small adjustment needed on front mech, but other than that it's bloody fantastic. Going up hills is a pleasure now!!

  • Hi, I got a Cayo (triple) a few months back and pondered for ages buying a bike over the web etc.

Decided against a Boardman after speaking to an owner of one and seeing some posts about various build issues. It seems to depend on the bike...if your lucky and get a good one, it's great, but a bad one...

Been into a bike fit shop and they were amazed at the kit on the Cayo for the price. If new 105 comes out, that's fine, it won't be leagues ahead in difference.

Wiggle were great with questions and send a couple of tools, like a park pedal spanner and multi-tool. They will also accept the bike back if you don't like it.

Only issue is the cables are a little rattly, should be sortable at some point. But apart from that the bike is awesome, much faster than anything else I have riden. On the first ride out I averaged nearly 2 miles an hour quicker.

I tried a Scott and a Fuji - glad I went for the Cayo! (Scott to expensive, Fuji just did not fit).

  • I have got a Cayo Triple and I am very pleased with it. Well set up out of the box etc etc.

I have afriend who has the Boardman and he is very happy with it.

Really they are 2 great bikes for the money, you would not be disappointed.

You can try the Cayo from Wiggle and return within 7 days (I think, check it out) to make a really informed decision if you want to go through that bother.
  • Other thing to look at would be a Planet-X. I got myself the build they were doing with the new ultegra group and a couple of tweaks. But if you're limited to £1k because of the B2W scheme then they do a special B2W build as well.
Not in a position to say one's better than t'other but the planet-x is very nice.
    Music, beer, sport, repeat...
  • After much deliberation, i decided against the boardman - due to various problems i have heard -, i know i said i didn't want a ribble but i've just ordered a Ribble Gran Fondo with Campy veloce groupset, never had campy so i am quite excited. the deda frame did it for me. Also no problems i have heard about the bike.
