Boring gear question

I`m having a tedious problem with my rear gears, i`ve replaced the cable and cleaned the mech , it`s indexed good and the limit screws are good and everything. The problem is it changes up the gears perfectly and down to about fifth but it doesn`t want to go into the next gear so I have to trim it hard with the shifter and it`s the same for all the lower gears after that, the deraileur just doesn`t want to go over on it`s own. The bike is 3 1/2 years old so does it need a new deraileur or could it be the shifter or something else?

so which way is it having problems?

with the cable pulling or the spring pulling?

    is the mech hanger bent?

    The hanger looks fine.

It goes up the gears fine, it`s when I change down it doesn`t want to go over when it gets to the middle. If I index it so it changes down ok then I can`t go up the gears at all so i`m not sure if it`s the spring .

Should I just buy a new deraileur?

I still think that is the cables - make sure the oyters are cut flush and are clean.

It has the original outer but I gave it a good spray with GT 85 when I replaced the cable a few weeks ago. I`ll have another look at the outer anyway.

Too much Lateral play in Jockey wheels (guide wheel)??

I don`t think so. I replaced the jockey wheels not that long ago.

Strangely I took the outer off and cleaned it and the cable and now it`s worse than ever.

Replace the outer and ferrules then, not a lot of cost. I always replace the outers when I put new cables on. Use the Shimano stuff (SP41?), cheap and you can buy the outer by the metre from CRC.

    I've bought a new bike....ouch - result
    Can I buy a new bike?...No - no result

I ordered two of these. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=1595 the long ones. I don`t know why anyone would buy the short one, it`s half as much for the same price.

Well it looks like super was right, the outer is ridiculously tight on the cable at the rear for some reason but I got it working better. I don`t know if the fibrax cable I used is thicker than others or what but a new outer should fix it.
