Blimey, I wouldn't wear that much for riding at -5 degrees.
    More problems but still living....
  • MTB overshoes, and your feet will forever be warm and almost dry!
It needs to be sub-zero before you can feel it with only one pair of socks for protection.

    From the top,

    Assos Skull cap
    Buff
Helly Hansen short sleeve base layer
    Assos 851 Jacket
    Assos 851 bib tights
    Defeet Woolie Boolie socks
    Pro Tarmac Overshoes
    Salomon Aero GTX gloves

Total cost is a lot of money and I am frightened to add it all up but I was as warm as toast on a 4 hour ride in freezing conditions so it is worth it. I have to add that I am currently on about my 4th year with a lot of my Assos kit and it is still as good as new.

So a new cycling jacket it is.

Overshoes anyone? Personally I think it's a pretty cool piece of kit...thinking about getting a pair of Mavic tempo to match my Fury XCs.

As more often than not its wet ground these days my new endura overshoes keep me toasty and dry.

I got those on Saturday, they any good?

Cost me £22 from my LBS though
  • they are wonderful :)

    Specialized Deflect gloves
    ...
    Specialized Radiant gloves
Would be interested to know how you rate these two pairs of gloves. Ta.
Aspire not to have more, but to be more.
  • erm...both good, that's why I use them :)

Deflects nice and warm and hard-wearing.
Radiants are silly warm and a bit bulky so really only get brought out for the very cold stuff. They've got a wee pocket on the back for a hand warmer sachet for when it gets properly arctic. Good amount of reflective stuff too
  • I use

Aldi skull cap under my LAS Squalo helmet
Aldi overshoes over my DHB D1 MTB shoes
    Helly Hansen liner gloves
    Aldi cold weather gloves
    Addidas bib tights
    Umbro t shirt
    Any old cycling jersey s/s
    Santini arm warmers
    ankle socks ( any)
    Lusso shower proof jkt
    Tresspass fleece buff

And I'm toasty and warm cycling up here in the pennines
Bianchi. There are no alternatives only compromises!

Wish I'd gone for those - got the Night Vision race ones instead and they really don't fit very well! Plus they are really thin :(

I use a Rapha lightweight softshell jacket all winter with a thin or thick base {Helly Hansen Ice} depending how cold it is, ronhill bikesters over bibshorts, headband for ears, overshoes always and defeet gloves, if it`s really cold glove liners too under altura fleece gloves. I never wear more than one layer under my jacket.

Finally decided to go for the Mavic Tempo overshoes, should arrive in a couple of days. Fit should not be a problem on my Mavic Fury since it's from the same company. A pair of SmartWool socks and there should be not probs in the cold.

I've had a helly hansen baselayer top and leggings for many years and they still serve me well. I wear them under a pair of dhb bibtights, with a pair of dhb overshoes on top. Under my helmet I have a rather natty tartan cap by Walz, which has ear flaps to keep the worst of the cold out. And a pair of sealskinz windproof gloces - these only failed me once last winter when the temp was -3deg!!!

    The assos.
I wear one of these with just a base layer if its about 5 degrees.
If it is colder I either wear ls shirt between or hi viz gillet on top for a few miles to warm up.
Just got 2 pair of those endura pro overshoes £17.99, really good, nice fit, warm and waterproof.
I have 3 lots of bibs I wear from decathlon, biemme and another un branded, all very good down to below zero but waiting for a new pair of endura stealth bib tights, waterproof and windproof.

Out early this am in short base layer, short sleeve, short sleeve summer top and Rapha softshell. Bit warm overall, but just base I think would have been too cold. Tough getting it right!

I work in a bar so I ride in in the morning/afternoon and usually leave at 1:30 or so. We don't have showers at work and I have good circulation/sweat like a biatch so I'd rather be a bit cold at the begining and arrive dry than leave the house toasty and arrive soaked in sweat. I don't want to carry two sets of clothes so I like three/four season stuff. The idea of a £150 jacket for late spring/early autumn (ie 2 months) strikes me as nuts. On the way in:

    Altura Attack waterproof 3/4s
    Endura short liner
    Helly Hansen wicking SS jersey
Gore Phantom II Windstopper, sleeves off
    Endura windproof gloves
    Goretex boots

Than on the way back I add legwarmers and zip the sleeves onto the jacket, with a skullcap under my helmet if it's really cold. This setup is perfect for me, I'm not aware of the temperature and I arrive dry. As has been said above, a good jacket is a real investment but you'll get a lot of use out of it. The only item that isn't year- round is the 3/4s.

Aldi winter bibs - pretty good but draughty round the ankles
Aldi overshoes - stop the above and work really well
gaffer taped all vents on my cycle shoes
    Aldi winter cycle socks
    Aldi winter gloves - excellent
    Labgear merino skullcap
    UnderArmour Coldgear L/S baselayer
Gore Windstopper jacket - THE best investment yet...

Just about been cold enough to make me think about a mid-layer on top, but not sure what to use yet?
