Just interested to see what everyone is wearing for the winter so I can put the necessary kit in my x'mas shopping list. So, from top to toe fire away!

If the temperature is variable then de marchi winter jacket, then long sleeve jersey underneath and a long sleeve base layer underneath that. Good for if you're doing a hard ride with easier bits. Say loads of climbs, unzip winter jacket on the way up,

    I feel it, when I sorrow most;
    'Tis better to have loved and lost;
Than never to have loved at all."

I did a 30 miler on tuesday 2 degrees. I had base layer, long sleeved tee shirt, copy of the chorley guardian down my front, and a top layer....warm as toast I was.

  • Gregarios Superclub Ciclista winter jacket created for the team by Giordana. Top piece of kit - I can usually get through the winter with one good long sleeve undervest underneath.

I get by with short sleeve base layer, short sleeve jersey, arm warmers, and winter jacket (Gill Freedom - great jacket, sadly discontinued). Always been warm enough even on the coldest days, and don't overheat on the that end up mild.

So a new cycling jacket it is.

Overshoes anyone? Personally I think it's a pretty cool piece of kit...thinking about getting a pair of Mavic tempo to match my Fury XCs.

gore bike wear windstopper softshell - insert model of choice for best fit.

    craft thermal - LS

bib tights / Lidl cycle trousers.

    gore windstopper gloves

    cycling plus buff

    windstopper headband (DHB)

    done!

I'd add overshoes if it was terrible, and maybe glove silk liners.

Overshoes? Still trying to get my feet sorted. Always end up numb up beyond the ankles on the coldest days.

Don't know why you're talking about spring/autumn temperatures in winter!
For cold weather (-6 tuesday morning in Perth) Aldi bib longs, 2 cheap old base layer tops, thick socks, Aldi soft shell jacket, Aldi winter gloves, buff (worn as scarf but pulled up over the chin, or even nose & ears, for descents) and Aldi skull cap type hat.

Total cost of that lot about £50 except the base layers, I think they might have been something in shillings. I used to have a merino top but I washed it a few times too many & it almost literally disintegrated.

Them buffs up over the chin make a difference. I lost control of my face on Tues w/o one as it was so cold. Spoke like a drunkard until I had a shower when I got to work.

Only thing is, with one on over the nose, and specs, and a headband on too, I looked like an IRA hitman in a flouro yellow windstopper, and cycle hat beret..

(school kids freaked. I was like a black worm in lycra.)

Oh I probably wouldn't go out if it's below 1 or 2 degrees, I 'm not that hardcore a cyclist, I just enjoy the road/trail and fiddling with the bikes. Thanks though.

Decent socks and overshoes are a must for me in minus temperatures, pedalling with blocks of ice is no fun.

    Endura Humvee 3/4
    DeWalt safety boot socks
Reebok (?model) waterproof jacket with detachable arms

    Specialized BG Gel full gloves
Endura Strike gloves (although Santa has some Polaris Vortex to deliver)
Aldi skullcap & overshoes (yet to use latter though)
    Hi-vis vest

icebreaker top, gore tex jacket and Dhb log leg bib tights and when sub zero buff around the ears and forehead to avoid ice cream head ache.

Last year there were two and half weeks when my commutes did not go above zero and on one day my outside thermometer recorded -12.5 c on that occasion I wore a Buffalo top and merino glove liners.

I'm seeing a few people having Assos and Gore jackets. I know they are expensive but are they worth the money? I'm leaning towards the Gore Cosmo WindStopper jacket as I like the fact that it has lots of pockets. Should be good for MTB use too. Anyone like to comment on them?

    I wear the following in sub zero;

    Helly hybrid base layer
    Endura stealth jacket
    Endura thermolite tights
    Endura Strike gloves
    Endure luminite overshoes
    Endura thermal socks

LBS sells Endura in case you didnt notice!

Wear the same for my mtb

Change to a thinner base layer if it warms 3 - 7, depending on if its a cold wind or not!

I doubt there will be Endura in LBSs here across the pond, they sell them here but they are rare. Plenty of Pearl Izumi though. I do have a pair of Endura singletrack shorts that I used to wear over my Izumi tights for commuting in London and I like them. Also scraped together some old base layers, so all I need now is a pair of overshoes and a decent jacket.

If you're looking for one really warm, hard wearing and functional jacket, look at Gore Bikewear - the Gore Tool is one of my faves - very warm, pit-zips to keep the fug at bay and loads of good pockets..
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

    S/S cycling top.
Assos 851 jacket or Lusso soft shell, depends on how windy it is...
    Assos Airprotec LL F1 Bibtights

    SealSkinz gloves.
    Pro Tarmac NPU+ overshoes.

I can't fault a single item of my Gore stuff, since you ask. It is cheaper than Assos too.

Long sleebe base layer, long sleeve summer jersey and a long sleeve winter jersey, covered by a wind proof jacket, long johns, winter bib tights, winter socks, mtb shoes and neoprene overshoes. Aldi winter skull cap, winet gloves.
  • Endura FS260 bib shorts
    Decathlon leg warmers
    Sugoi Hot Shot l/s jersey
    Altura cheapie jacket
    DeFeet Dura Gloves

Snug as a bug - thinking about a helmet liner tho'
Big thumbs up for own brand Decathlon leg and arm warmers - they stay up like no others!

About 3° to 8°C: Gill Morph jacket, Ground Effect Submerino l/s jersey, Aldi gloves, Endura undershorts, Altura winter cruisers, trainers.

<3°: Ground Effect bandana for ears (anything else is too hot), Pearl Izumi Amphib gloves, Aldi thermal longjohns under the cruisers, Endura thermolite socks.

On sub-zero days last winter I wore my windproof fleece instead of the Morph, though I was roasting after 20 minutes!
Aspire not to have more, but to be more.
