Hi All,

It's my first post, so hello from me :-)

I have a question about Winter storage of bikes ; I live in Austria, so it can get pretty cold in the winter, say maybe -5C or so at nigth, dipping to -10C maybe. I store my bikes outside my house, in my ca port, so thay are protected from any rain/snow/wind, but they are of course getting cold.

But could this be harmful for them ?

The other option would be to put them into the cellar, but it can get quite damp down there, so I am a little reluctant ...

cheers ... Wally

dont think cold will hurt them. i wrried about damp.sheet it over inside. :o
  • Are you talking not using them all winter or parking them between regular use? The former I would lube them up and put them in the cellar and clean them off in the spring, the latter I'd put an old blanket over them to protect saddles etc from the worst of the cold.

I've never heard of a bicycle suffering from hypothermia.

Well, my summer bike is now cleaned, polished and stored up in our loft room (centrally heated) - so nice and pampered :)

The cold won't effect it, although if it's -10C and you try to defrost it with boiling water, it might not thank you ! It probably won't like being kept outside in the damp either, although when I was at Uni, my MTB lived out doors in all weathers and was fine. If you keep it outside, just make sure that it's greased and lubed properly and put a tarp or bike cover over it.

My road bike is currently warm and snug in the spare room, but is is on a turbo trainer, otherwise the other half may have relegated it to the garage by now !!
