Chain Replacement

Gears were changing slowly on my Spesh Rockhopper, chain was stretched, so I bought a HG93 chain which says fits the Deore chainset.
I measured the chain length against my old chain and tried to remove several links using a chain tool on a multitool - but it would not budge the pin.
Bought a icetoolz chain tool and it's removed the pin - but it seemed like far too much effort?
Should it be difficult :?: I checked all the pins in the vicinity and they all looked the same?
Chain is on and seems fine with a SRAM powerlink connector
Thanks

PS Gear change still slow - replacing cables next

Pins are rather hard to move particularly with a small tool.
My bet would be the cables for poor shifts, easier than changing the cassette.0 -

Put it this way - you don't want the pins working loose by themselves.

I'd like to know which pin to remove on an Shimano HG 8 speed chain. And can you replace with the old pin?Planet X Kaffenback 2

Maybe my tool is too big? (use lewd voice!)
lonegroover: on my chain the paper in the box said which pin to remove and gave a link pin to use. But, I bought a couple of power links for ease.0 -

You can remove any pin apart from any joining pins - they look slightly different. And no you shouldn't replace with old pin, you need to get a joining pin - it has little bit on the end that you snap off after assembling:

Assuming my chain has never been removed, should there be only one joining pin, the one used while the factory/LBS assembled the bike.Planet X Kaffenback 2
