Hey

I have been pondering for a while now whether to build myself a bike. But as i am on a budget i always put the idea off. Until i saw a frame i loved that was not that expensive.
So far i am thinking this:

White or Orange on one 456/inbred
Tora sl from merlin
Haynes strokers or juicy 3's
Carbon seatpost

My questions are, can someone find a very cheap group set or is it cheaper to buy seperate. Also can some people post pics of there 456's so i can get an idea?

Cheers

  • look at the deore groupset from merlin.

    excellent value kit.
  • I think that was about 200 quid ? Is it generally cheaper to buy seperate?

  • not if you can get a deal on the whole groupset!!!

no one would ever buy a groupset if it was more expensive than the sum of its parts!
  • True lol
  • I have decided to take off things from my bike that i have now to save money. Any other frames for the same price worth considering or is the 456 the best for that cash.

Handsome Dog Talisman and a whole glut of alu frames for that cash.

Do you need a 456 with a Tora SL? Maybe the standard inbred would suit you better.
  • Whats the difference? is the 456 meant for more burlier riding than standard singletrack?
  • Yes just checked On One and the 456 is for long travel forks. Didn't realise that :D
Ok so standard inbred with tora's?
    Taff
  • Might be wrong but I thought the 456 stood for 4inch, 5inch, 6inch forks and was designed to ride at either travel fork? Thought I read that here, please ignore if I'm totally wrong! :)

Yeh you'd be right but a lot reckon that it doesn't ride very well at 100mm.
  • it's not hugely nice at 110!!!!!

an inbred would be a much better fit for those forks, the 456 has all the hype, but the inbred is just as good. I had one running 100mm sus corrected rigid forks and it handled really well. i'm pretty certain that the derore groupset on merlin is £175 if you have it with v-brakes... I will post a pic of my inbred on here later when i'm not at work if you want? but it was a single speed.

  • Anybody have a weight for an Inbred frame out of curiosity?

They vary a bit over the years, but for the medium is about 4.7lbs, the 456 5.4lbs. Summer Season is more than that.
  • Thanks Sonic, still swithering over whether to change frame or not. Swaying more to nothing wrong with what I have!

Your new build seems like will be a cheaper incarnation of the CinderCone! Why not go for something different?

and you want to nick bits off that to build up an inbred?

  • That's what I was worried about. I'm not sure how good a frame the Kona is. However I've been coming round more to your way of thinking as you've kept telling me if I don't have a problem with something don't change it! Everything I've upgraded so far has been to reduce weight on the bike.

What would you suggest as an upgrade from a cindercone if I was to change the frame?

I mainly ride XC at Glentress and I'm resisting media trends in that I don't think I need an all mountain bike. I always just called it cross country before all these categories came in :?

I don't have a budget at the moment as only an idea on the back boiler.

I know we all have our own preferences and the end decision will be mine but your suggstions would be appreciated.

    Cheers

The OnOne is a good frame - for the money. People have wrongly got it in their heads it is better than just about everything else out there, and I have see many people 'upgrade' and end up with heavier/inferior builds to what they have, especially with the Summer Season which is heavy and basic (albeit tough)

It can be hard to sum up a frame, and sure, if you like it that is the best indicator. But there are stronger steels that build into lighter frames and certainly many lighter alu frames.

As budget frames go the Inbred and 456 frames are just about the best out there - certainly up with the Orange p7 which costs 3x as much. But once you start getting into Reynolds 853 territory, Cotic Souls, Rock Lobster TIG and Genesis 853 you enter a new arena.

The CinderCone is a good alu frame. I am not sure the Inbred will be any 'better' or even if you will feel a difference in the comfort. And it is heavier. Is it an upgrade???
  • any aversion to carbon?

If i were building up an xc bike the scale and the cannondale flash (available as a frame?) would be at the top of my list. Or some Ti loveliness from lynskey
  • Aversion yes, funds no!!!!!

I just wasn't sure wheter the cindercone was a good / bad frame. I like it and I've had no problems with it. It's a bit tired looking now so thought I might replace it and get a better ride was all. I have looked at Cotic and I do like the Cove Handjob.

Having read your replies I would say that no the Inbred isn't an upgrade after all Sonic so thanks for that!

I'll keep riding and pondering meantime. It's like a new bike with wheel and fork upgrades just now anyway.

Thanks and sorry for the hijack!!

It is just different. That is all! Top upgrade you need to identify an area in where you know it will be better.

    Consider this for steel:

Well reviewed, good price. Look at the geometry though and compare to what you have.

i'd stick with the cindercone unless you have a pretty good level of funds, kona may not make the lightest or the most flashy frames, but the handling is great, and changing a frame always ends up costing more than you want it to. My girlfriend used to have a team tig 853, they are well made and very neat, mass isn't too bad either.
